Local Principal, Dwight Liddiard, Selected to Present in Nice, France

Dwight Liddiard, principal at East Meadows Elementary, is currently serving on the Board of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). As part of that assignment, he was recently invited by the United States State Department Office of Overseas Schools to attend the European Council of International Schools Conference held in Nice, France.

The Department of Overseas Schools works with schools sponsored by the State Department to assist schools in foreign countries that provide educational services to American students overseas. The European Council serves schools all over Europe. Over 2,700 participants were involved in the conference. Keynote Speaker for the conference was Professor Sugata Mitra who has worked in the area of Information Science and Educational Technology for over 30 years and is currently Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University. Dr. Mitra`s experiments with unsupervised access to public computers by children in remote areas, often called the "Hole in the Wall" experiments which are known throughout the world. His "Hole in the Wall" project in India was the inspiration behind "Slumdog Millionaire".

During the international conference, Mr. Liddiard and others from the National Association of Elementary Principals as well as The National Association of Secondary School Principals presented a session on the New Utah Core Standards that have been adopted by 48 US States. The members of the NAESP were also hosted as special guests of Sodexo, a company that provides school lunch for most of the schools in France.

Dwight and his wife, Brenda, were accompanied in France by Keith Miller from the state department and Barbara Chester, President of NAESP. While traveling in the French Rivera, they were able to visit Monte Carlo, Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, and other areas around Nice. The had the opportunity to tour castles, beaches, a perfume factory, museums, churches, and open air street markets.
