WASHINGTON, D.C.--July 2010--Dwight Liddiard, East Meadow's Principal and a Nebo School District administrator, recently visited Washington, D.C., with more than 400 colleagues for a joint meeting of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), which brings together affiliate associations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Mr. Liddiard, who currently serves on the Board of Directors for NAESP, had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with United States Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, on important issues including formula versus competitive funding for programs such as Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged (Title I), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), concerns about Take Over portions of plans to improve schools, funding issues for recruitment and retention, national standards, and others.

Mr. Liddiard stated, “It was a fabulous opportunity for our Board of Directors to have such immediate input with the Secretary of Education. It was great for me to get to talk about my school, East Meadows, and share concerns that federal mandates cause for local schools. It was a highlight for my career to be able to meet and visit with the Secretary of Education."

Secretary Duncan has been very supportive of the role of the principal in working on school improvement. During a recent address to principals he is quoted with the following, "Thank you for everything that you do as principals. We can’t have great schools without great leaders. I’m proud to be your partner in working to offer every single child the world class education that they deserve."
