Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants October 2020 - Answer to Wednesday Challenge

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District.  Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need.  Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.

“That’s what the foundation is all about – to give our students the best educational opportunities possible through classroom grants,” said Lana Hiskey, executive director.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the lives of students.

Larsen Elementary – Shaylyn Townsend
Shaylyn Townsend, special education teacher at Larsen Elementary said, “We are thrilled to receive this grant for our special education classrooms. Our students are the most at-risk in the school and require extra assistance with their learning. Having this technology will allow us to use various learning apps to assist them in their learning. Technology is a great tool for learning and our student's require various methods of learning, as they all learn so differently. We are looking forward to using apps to help with writing letters and numbers, number recognition, using various apps that have built in assessments, and more! We are also grateful to be able to assist our students in learning how to use technology in the case that we end up in quarantine again.”

Meadow Brook Elementary – Jessika Anderson
“The fourth-grade teachers at Meadow Brook Elementary in Springville are excited about the change in the Utah Science Standards for this upcoming school year. Now, we are even more excited because we get to use this generous grant to purchase materials to help our students understand phenomena! Supplies purchased with this grant will allow us to teach our students about energy, wavelength, animals, and earth and moon patterns. We are grateful for this opportunity because having proper materials allows students to participate. Students will be able to investigate in a hands-on approach to learn real-world skills,” said Jessika Anderson, fourth-grade teacher at Meadow Brook Elementary.

Spanish Oaks Elementary – Tiffany Taylor
Tiffany Taylor, third-grade teacher at Spanish Oaks, said, “We are very grateful to the Nebo Foundation for providing, Spanish Oaks Elementary with a grant to purchase new headphones. These headphones will allow us to incorporate more learning opportunities for each student at our school. Students will use these headphones in their Nearpod lessons. In these lessons they will watch and learn from amazing interactive videos and activities. They will also use them for our district adopted iReady Math and Reading programs. We are also excited to utilize the headphones by having students listen to books being read to them on myon.com, Sora or Epic. Students will also have the opportunity to create videos on Adobe Spark that requires them to record their voice to narrate their writing assignments. The educational opportunities will be endless with these new headphones.”

Mapleton Junior  – Brittany Lundell
“Wow! I am so excited for the opportunity that you all have provided me with to be able to buy my special needs students some bikes. My students now will have the opportunity to not only learn the life skill of riding a bike, but it will give them a chance to explore the community a little and a chance to release their wiggles and better help them focus on other life skills as well. I love to take non-traditional ways of teaching in a hope to meet many different students' needs. Research shows that students that can exercise regularly learn better. I want to thank everyone on the Nebo Foundation Board for the wonderful life-changing opportunity that they have provided my amazing students!" exclaimed Brittany Lundell, special education teacher at Mapleton Junior.

Spanish Fork Junior  – Russell LeMmon
“Thank you so very much for approving my grant request for a new set of World Geography Atlases. My old atlases were very much out of date and falling apart. These will be invaluable in helping my students explore their world,” said Russell LeMmon, geography and history teacher at Spanish Fork Junior.

Cherry Creek Elementary – Alexa Pullan
"
When I asked my kids why they were so excited about getting chair pockets from the Nebo Education Foundation, one student said, 'I'm really thankful because I have a messy desk and I need a chair pocket to help keep me organized. I know that being organized will help me focus at school.' Another student said, 'I'm SO glad that we won't have to shove things in our desks anymore!' stated Alexa Pullan, third-grade teacher at Cherry Creek Elementary. "We really are so grateful for the generous donation of $360.95, without which, we would have the continuous need to "shove" things in desks.  These chair pockets will help kids across two classes of about 25 students each for several years. Because of this donation, 200+ students will be able to better focus in class and develop organizational skills- all while making the job of two teachers significantly easier!"

Congratulations to Kelsey Glenn for answering this week's "Where are we Wednesday?" challenge sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
