Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants to Teachers

The Nebo Education Foundation board met to discuss the many grants and needs across the district. This Foundation Board functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses as well as fundraisers where all the money goes to educate students in Nebo School District.

One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. It is planned for Monday, August 31, 2020. We appreciate the generous support of so many businesses and individuals to help pull this off.  We still have afternoon teams and hole sponsorships available. Thank you to all those that so generously supported Nebo students.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Santaquin Elementary – Misty Rindlisbacher
Misty Rindlisbacher, librarian at Santaquin Elementary, said, “Thank you so much for this grant!  It will be a tremendous help in updating our nonfiction collection in the library here at Santaquin Elementary!  I am particularly excited to purchase some current books about dinosaurs and some more recent sports books.  These are two very popular subjects among our students in all grades, and having updated titles will excite the students and motivate them to read even more.  Thank you again for your generosity and your contribution to making Nebo School district a fantastic place to work and to learn.”

Payson Junior – Travis Hatch
Travis Hatch, math teacher at Payson Junior said, “On behalf of the Payson Jr. High School math department we are very grateful for the Nebo Education Foundation Grant that will help us purchase classroom calculators.  Scientific calculators are an essential tool for jr. high math students, and having a classroom set greatly helps us efficiently provide students access to this tool.  Having a class set of calculators helps us teach students how to use the various functions of the calculators such as data analysis for example.  Having a class set of calculators also helps with class management as students can use the calculator instead of using other devices that can easily distract students.  The calculators that will be purchased with this grant will benefit 6 math teachers at the Jr. High and over 1,000 students that we teach.  Thank you!”

East Meadows Elementary – Lori Kofoed
“I am very grateful that the Nebo Education Foundation has approved the grant for flexible seating in my classroom. Without their generous contribution and matching funds from my wonderful principal, I would have never been able to make this change in my classroom. I will be purchasing a variety of flexible seating alternatives for my students. Flexible seating gives students a choice and helps promote community and collaboration. My goal is to enhance the educational environment and improve the learning process for my students. I am so excited to teach with flexible seating in place. (I felt like it was Christmas when I received the grant!)” exclaimed Lori Kofoed, first-grade teacher at East Meadows Elementary.

Fine Arts Specialist – Julie Christofferson
Julie Christofferson, district fine arts specialist, said, “We are thrilled to have the matching support funds for the purchase of slightly used rental instruments from local music vendors!  Often students on fee waivers have very little choice as to what instrument they can play, inasmuch as school and district purchases are limited in budget and can only cover the larger big ticket instruments such as tubas, percussion, string basses, cellos, tenor and bari saxophones etc that are out of reach for individual students to rent from a store.  Students often have to choose one of those big school owned instruments to play when most of the students rent smaller, more common instruments from music stores.  With these instruments, teachers will be able to check out instruments to use each year for students to be able to choose an instrument they really would like to learn to play!  Since we are buying used store rentals the price will be such that we can afford to buy more than we would new.  The store rentals have been well maintained by the music stores, but they like to replace them every couple of years since they want to rent "rent to own" instruments.  This is a win-win for everyone involved.  Due to the generous support of the Nebo Foundation many underprivileged students will be able to learn to play the instrument they had always hoped to learn to play!!”

East Meadows Elementary – Tricia Peterson
Tricia Peterson, first-grade teacher at East Meadows Elementary, said, “Thank you Nebo Foundation for this grant. I am so excited to give my student the ‘Flexible Seating’ options next year. I have had the opportunity to observed a classroom with Flexible seating and was pleasantly surprised with the behavior and focus of the students. With this grant I will be able to give my students the opportunity to focus and learn in a comfortable environment.

Orchard Hills Elementary – Robin Wheatley
“Thank you Nebo Education Foundation!  This generous donation will provide many new books for Orchard Hill’s take-home library. Students will be able to check out these books to read at home. These books are engaging and cover a variety of topics selected just for the emergent reader.  Reading these quality books will allow students to practice the skills they learned in the classroom. Thank you for supporting our students! ” exclaimed Robin Wheatley, educator at Orchard Hills Elementary.

Canyon Elementary – Penny McEntire
“Thank you to the Nebo Foundation for giving Canyon Elementary a grant for $500! We are thrilled to use these funds to add lower-level books to our take-home library. Next year, our pre-school class will be taking home a book each night to read with their families. With the funds from this grant, we will be able to offer a wider selection for these students to choose from.  We are appreciative of the generosity in funding this grant.  Thank you, from the Canyon Cougar Cubs!,” stated Penny McEntire, literacy specialist at Canyon Elementary.

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District.  Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need. Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.
