Nebo Hosts Emergency Disaster Shelter Event - Answer to Wednesday Challenge

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

Monday, September 16, 2019, Nebo School District hosted the Disaster Shelter Live Tour and Preparedness Fair with the American Red Cross and other volunteer organizations. The American Red Cross provided equipment and set up a shelter inside the Summit Center in Springville. Attendees were able to see how these shelters are organized and were introduced to resources from partnering organizations. Southern Baptist Ministries Disaster Relief also helped with the shelter and set up a child daycare inside as well as a portable kitchen outside. After community members toured the shelter, the Ministries Disaster Relief team served dinner to the community members as if they were currently residing in the shelter.

Presentations from the American Red Cross and Provo City Police were also available to the public on the topics such as Disaster Sanitation, Stop the Bleed, Hands Only CPR, 72-hour Kits and How to Help During a Disaster. Some handouts included a children’s Pedro Activity book to help young children understand and not be afraid of being prepared for a wide range of situations and emergencies.

This Emergency Disaster Shelter event prepared and informed attending community members about what would happen and what they should do in case of an emergency.
Attendees mentioned how grateful they were to be able to participate. With the recent fires in the area, this emergency preparedness fair came at the perfect time since many were evacuated from their homes at this exact time one year ago. Some families in Nebo were evacuated from one week to almost three weeks because of the Pole Creek and Bald Mountain fires.

Emergencies do come with little to no warning and being prepared can make all the difference in these situations. Nebo School District thanks all those who participated in educating and preparing our community for these emergencies.

Congratulations to Alice Wilson for answering this week’s “Where are we Wednesday?” challenge sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
