September 2019 Nebo PEAK Award Winners

THE PEAK AWARD CUSTOMER SERVICE PROGRAM
Nebo School District wants to showcase our Positive Energy and Kind employees. PEAK Awards are nominated by patrons and recognized by the Superintendent Staff and Nebo School Board of Education. The award is administered by the Communications and Community Relations Department.

Tonia Ivie, Secretary, Spanish Oaks Elementary
Nominated by: Kali Brown

“Mrs. Ivie interacts with our students, faculty, staff, and school community each day in a respectful and welcoming manner. She is genuinely happy to see each person that comes through our doors. Mrs. Ivie asks about their family and takes an interest in their lives. She makes everyone feel wanted, valued, connected, and welcome.

“Tonia immediately became an integral part of what we do every day here at Spanish Oaks! There is no job too small, no task too difficult, no request too... Well, you get the picture! Tonia is willing to do anything for anyone at any time! She is the most positive, willing, respectful, kind, happy, and pleasant person in the world. She makes coming to work an absolute delight every day!”

Dixie Dalton, Technician, Orchard Hills Elementary
Nominated by: Patti Erickson

“Dixie Dalton has been helping children at Orchard Hills for seven years. She is technically our school's skills room monitor, but she is more than that and wears many hats. Dixie helps students at recess if they are hurt. She gives insulin shots and helps check blood sugar. She always smiles and welcomes kids to the skills room. Dixie is the first person to say, ‘How can I help you?’ or ‘You bet I can - no problem.’ Dixie works hard to address our homeless students’ needs and always focuses on the positive.
Dixie wants to always do her best to ensure that students are getting the help, attention, and care they deserve. Orchard Hills is so lucky to have her as one our heroes!”

Kenneth N. Shaw, Building Technician, Spring Lake Elementary
Nominated by: Necia Albrecht & Teresa Jordan

“Mr. Shaw retired from the business world and decided to spend a few hours each day helping at his neighborhood school. The students and teachers love, love, love Mr. Shaw. We are so blessed to have him at Spring Lake. He starts his day greeting students as they walk in the front door. Mr. Shaw is so happy, positive, friendly, and calls everyone by name. He helps with morning and lunch supervision and organizes games and activities to keep students involved and engaged. Mr. Shaw is always watching out for students who are alone, looking for a friend, or those who might need a little nudge getting involved. He has established connections with multiple students who suffer from anxiety or may be struggling in other ways. If Mr. Shaw isn't helping a student in skills, he goes next door and gives kids one-on-one help in our K-3 resource classrooms. He has such a desire to help our students be successful and goes above and beyond his ‘job description’ every single day. Every school needs a Mr. Shaw!”

Kim Larsen, Teacher, Art City Elementary
Nominated by: Mandie Peterson

“As a fellow employee and as a mother, I find Kim Larsen exceptional. She worked tirelessly with my son. Kim made efforts to contact and work with me as a parent. She has gone above and beyond to use different learning styles and make sure all kids feel welcome. My son has always struggled in school and still struggles this year. But, he knows that his teacher cares about him.

“In my teaching role, Kim encourages me to do my best each day. I want to be the teacher that a mom wants to send her kids to. Kim is an amazing example of good teaching and that makes me want to live and work where good teachers are!”

Shelly S. Smith, Reading Technician, Hobble Creek Elementary
Nominated by: Michael Johnson

“Shelly Smith has served as a teacher, School Community Council member, parent helper, and now a reading recovery technician for Hobble Creek Elementary. Shelly represents the VERY BEST of Nebo School District. She loves and advocates for children and will do whatever she can to help children succeed. Her teaching abilities are truly some of the best you will ever encounter. Shelly donates countless hours to Hobble Creek as she sees a need. Shelly has made our school and community a better place.”

Chelsie Young, Teacher, Landmark High
Nominated by: Sue Ann Harding

“Chelsie focuses on student behavior in her classroom. When the basic classroom interventions were not enough, she researched various interventions and strategies to improve student behavior. Chelsie created a tracking system to identify students who were causing the most distractions. She shared her strategies with other teachers who also began to track student behavior. Chelsie leads our school in collaboration where we discuss best practices in working with students, parents, classroom management, and unique culture challenges that we face at an alternative high school. Chelsie listens to teachers’ concerns and identifies areas that our entire faculty can benefit from. These discussions and trainings have led to a more cohesive culture in our school.”

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This initiative is designed to focus on "raising the bar" on providing exceptional customer service, both internally and externally. A key component of this initiative is the development of the PEAK Award. The PEAK (Positive Energy and Kindness) Award is presented monthly to someone in the Nebo School District who "really gets it" when it comes to providing exceptional customer service, which in turn results in positive impacts on everyone including students, parents, co-workers and members of the community.

Who Gets Nominated?
Faculty and staff members are nominated by anyone in the community through the Nebo School District website, www.nebo.edu/PEAK wherein a special Customer Service link is provided. The directions as to how to nominate an employee for the PEAK Awards are clearly spelled out on the site. All nominations must include information on how the individual has provided exceptional customer service, as well as how the employee's actions impacted the nominator's overall perception of Nebo School District Schools. The name and contact information of the nominator must be included.
