Nebo Education Surprises Teachers March 2019 - Answer to Wednesday Challenge

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities served by Nebo School District. Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students.

These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. The “Green Fever” tournament will be Thursday, May 16, 2019. The morning flight is full, but the noon flight is still accepting golfers and donations. The Nebo Foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support these grants and other projects.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the lives of students.

Wilson Elementary – Tiffany Cook
“Thank you for coming into our classroom with such a great surprise! I can’t wait to get new books for my students. The kids were so excited when you left!” exclaimed Tiffany Cook, third-grade teacher at Wilson Elementary. “Reading is a life skill that each student must obtain, and I am passionate in helping a child learn how to love to read. It is my goal to ensure that each child has reading material to help them progress at their level in our classroom. In third grade, students need to build the stamina to read longer chapter books. Each child needs to read a chapter book at their level, rather than struggle with reading an advanced reader. The books that will be purchased for our classroom will allow students to build their reading stamina through reading lengthier chapter books. Books have a powerful impact on a student! I am so excited to place books into the hands of my students to make a powerful influence in their lives!”

Mt. Loafer Elementary – Melanie Wirfs
“I am so happy to receive this grant from the Foundation! The money from this grant will be used to purchase science supplies for our sixth-grade science curriculum. The supplies will allow myself and my other teammates to demonstrate and show students Science concepts and allow students to have a hands-on learning approach to the new sixth-grade science core. Our students love science, and when they have the opportunity to conduct experiments using hands-on models and tools, their learning is enhanced and their engagement improves. Thank you so much again!” exclaimed Melanie Wirfs, sixth-grade teacher at Mt. Loafer Elementary.

Barnett Elementary – Dayna Rush
Dayna Rush, third-grade teacher at Barnett Elementary, said, “Seeing you all come down the hallway to award my team member and I with this grant was the best way I could have started my day. I am so thankful to you. With these funds we will be able to incorporate more technology into our classrooms with Chromebooks. We will be able to engage our students through a variety of activities using more technology. I am  so excited about what I can do next in our classroom, and it is all thanks to the Nebo Foundation. You truly are heroes!”

Santaquin Elementary – Stephanie Ostler
“Thank you so much for the grant! I am excited to have a class set of Chromebooks and a cart to put them in. This money comes at a perfect time. We are almost ready to start our year-end review, and I am excited to have Chromebooks to monitor each student’s learning. As a class, we will be able to have engaging, motivating learning experiences using Chromebooks. All of my students will now be able to spend time on Imagine Learning each day. Students will be able to use Adobe Spark, Quizlet Live, and many other technology based resources. Having a Chromebook cart will make it so that the students are able to put the Chromebooks away and plug them in. The cart will also save space in my classroom. Thank you!” exclaimed Stephanie Ostler, second-grade teacher at Santaquin Elementary.

Santaquin Elementary – Jane Wright
Jane Wright, second-grade teacher at Santaquin Elementary, stated, “Thank you so much for the grant to purchase Chromebooks for our class. It makes it possible for us to use Quizlet Live, Adobe Spark, and Imagine Learning as a whole class. It will make centers run more smoothly and will help us write reports online. My students are so much more motivated to learn when I include technology, something that has been difficult to do without the proper equipment. Also having a cart will save me time by making it possible for students to put away their own Chromebook. (Something they couldn't do when I was using dish strainers.) Thanks again.”

Barnett Elementary – Patricia Hanson
“A BIG thank you to the Nebo Foundation for funding our grant for Chromebooks to use in our second-grade classrooms. We are so excited to have updated equipment! The Chromebooks we have been using have been very well used and don’t always work properly. Our second-graders feel so grown up when they get to use Chromebooks. Our Digital Coach, Greg Crockett, comes in weekly to teach our kids how to use the Chromebooks and has helped us set up Google classroom so we can have assignments posted for our kiddos to work on. Thank you again for allowing Barnett second-graders to grow and keep up with the times,” stated Patricia Hanson, second-grade teacher at Barnett Elementary.

Orchard Hills Elementary – Alyson Norton
Alyson Norton, speech specialist at Orchard Hills Elementary, said, “Several of our students have difficulty communicating verbally. This grant will help pay for the production of two outdoor communication signs. The signs will offer multiple students with complex communication needs regular and dependable access to an augmentative & alternative communication (AAC) system. AAC facilitates an appropriate and healthy way for these students to communicate their needs, wants and ideas with peers, faculty, and staff when they are outside on the playground.  Dozens, if not hundreds of verbal peers will also be able to better understand their friends who communicate in different ways. We are beyond excited and grateful to be able to furnish our playground with AAC signs and provide increased access to the basic right of communication for all of our students.”

Mt. Loafer Elementary – Shellie Olsen
“Thank you so much for approving the grant that will allow our first-graders to have access to a set of Bee Bots and a docking station. The students are beyond excited about the idea of being able to learn early coding skills in such a fun, progressive way!  I personally can't wait to see their eyes light up as they become young technology 'experts'.   I plan to write lesson plans that will allow the Bee Bots to be used across the curriculum and benefit all 116 first-graders in our school this year, as well as those in years to come. With the matching funds from a parent donation, we'll be able to purchase 8 Bee-Bots, the docking station, and several supportive educational accessories.  Thanks again for your generous support!” said Shellie Olsen, first-grade teacher at Mt. Loafer Elementary.

Congratulations to Betty Tanner for answering this week's "Where are we Wednesday?" challenge.
