Submitted by ts on

The Crystal Apple Award recipient for the 2009-2010 school year for Taylor Elementary is Penny Oakeson. She is one of our first grade teachers. Penny has been a teacher at our school for five years. Before teaching first grade, she spent two years as a substitute teacher for Nebo School District.

Mrs. Oakeson has spent many hours helping to create and refine the first grade's curriculum map and essential learning outcomes for math and language arts. She is a firm believer and supporter of Professional Learning Communities and continually strives to improve her own knowledge and practices pertaining to PLCs as well as best teaching practices.

Penny grew up in Ephraim, Utah. She graduated from Snow College and later from Utah State University with her bachelor's degree in education. She now lives in Santaquin with her husband, Kevin, and three children, Jessica, Tyler, and Jordan. Penny's hobbies include cooking, camping, fishing, and hiking.

Colleagues of Penny's have the following to say about her: "Penny is always willing to step in and help when help is needed." "Penny is a positive person. She cheers everyone up, even when she's working through adversity in her own life." "Penny is tuned into others feelings. You can't hide your true feelings or emotions from her." "Penny genuinely cares about people-the whole person, not just the student or the teacher-the person." Mr. Daybell, Principal of Taylor Elementary, adds, "Penny is the type of teacher everyone wants on their team because of her abilities and sense of humor."

Congratulations, Penny, on being recognized for all you do for us!
