Nebo’s Payson High Hosts College Application Week and Financial Aid Night

As part of Utah College Application Week (UCAW), Payson High School hosted a College and Financial Aid Night on Thursday, November 15th. The goal of UCAW is to provide every high school senior the opportunity to complete at least one college or university application during the school day, with a particular focus on students who would be the first in their families to attend college, low-income students, or students who may not have otherwise considered applying.

Those who attended Payson High’s College and Financial Aid Night gained an understanding that college is for everyone, but that doesn’t always mean a traditional degree. For many students, earning a certificate in a trade is an excellent option for a career, or to prepare them for additional education. Students may be interested in taking advantage of an apprenticeship program post-high school, with much of their training and education being paid for. For some students, joining the military is an excellent option for post-secondary training.

College is an investment. College can be expensive, and figuring out how to pay for tuition and fees can seem overwhelming. Luckily, Utah’s public universities have the fourth lowest tuition in the country, and there are many resources available to help students prepare and lots of different ways to get the money needed.

At College and Financial Aid Night, college representatives from all of Utah’s System of Higher Education schools were available to answer questions from students and parents about college options. In addition, expert help was available to assist seniors and parents complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Representatives from my529, Sterling Scholar, Regents Scholarship, and Wells Fargo were available to discuss funding for college.

Tiffany Obray, English Teacher at Payson High, said, “Every year, thousands of dollars-worth in scholarships go unclaimed, so it is important for students to become aware of that. Scholarships are definitely worth looking into, even if students don’t think they qualify.”
