Nebo Education Foundation Gives May Grants to Teachers

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

The Nebo Education Foundation board met on May 2, 2017, to discuss the many grants and needs across the district. This Foundation Board functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses as well as fundraisers where all the money goes to educate students in Nebo School District.

One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year.  The “Green Fever” tournament will be Thursday, May 18, 2017. Thank you to all those that so generously supported Nebo students.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Oakridge – Tasha Lewis & Paul Daybell
Tasha Lewis, teacher at Oakridge, said, “While working on the classroom goals each day the students can experience controlled bouncing and vertical movement to redirect their attention to their work.  The swing and stimulation device will provide the student with sensory needs to help them better focus, and have less behavior issues.  They love the new swings, thank you so much.”

Park Elementary – Chelsea Porter & Tyrel James
“Thank you Nebo Foundation! I am so excited and can not wait to put these tables into action. The flower tables we can now purchase are going to effect every aspect of my classroom. When Mr. James and I found out that the Science Standards were changing to be more STEM centered, we knew we needed a better work space for our kids to really put that engineering aspect to work. Now we can easily have groups of students building and problem solving as a team. Not only will it help in Science but I can have flexible seating! These tables don't hold any of the students personal belongings, so I can now arrange my seating chart by subject and group my students based off of need or level. Students will no longer be coming to the back table to read with me, I will be moving to them! I am just giddy over being awarded this grant and it is going to help my sixth grade classroom in so many ways! Thank you again!,” stated Chelsea Porter, sixth-grade teacher at Park Elementary.

Tyrel James, sixth-grade teacher at Park Elementary, said, “First off, thank you Nebo Education Foundation for approving my grant! The tables that I will be getting are going to have a positive effect on each student in my classroom. The tables will naturally provide a collaborative space for student interaction and learning. Students will be able to synergize together to complete tasks more effectively. Thanks again.”

Spanish Fork High – Shane Ferrin
Shane Ferrin, photography teacher at Spanish Fork High said, “I just want to express my gratitude to the Foundation for funding the grant.  These Osmo Gimbal Cameras will enable my Video II students to dramatically improve their overall footage quality and will expand the range of what is possible in their productions.  Until this purchase, most of the motion footage shot by my students has been poor quality and resulted in disappointment for both them and for me as their instructor.  Now, their moving footage will be smooth and clean - and at a fraction of what Hollywood-caliber equipment would cost.  I'm excited to see what my kids can do with these Osmo cameras!”

Park View Elementary – Joyce Bjarnson
Joyce Bjarnson, librarian said, “We are so grateful and excited about the Nebo Education Foundation Grant which will allow our school to purchase the new WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA 2017 set.  This edition's Spinescape is a night-sky photo taken of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountain range on the border between the U.S. states of California and Nevada.  The scene shows dawn overtaking night and symbolizes the enlightening impact of knowledge on confusion and ignorance.  We celebrate the opportunity to present this beautiful edition to our readers who strive to learn and to know here at Park View Elementary.”

Mt. Loafer Elementary – Callie Naccarato
Callie Naccarato, fifth-grade teacher at Mt. Loafer Elementary said, “Thank you so much to the Nebo Foundation for the grant that I received. I am so excited to use this money to purchase high interest books for my leveled library. I also plan to replace some well loved books that are falling apart. My students are so excited.”

Mapleton Junior – Nicollette Anderson
“Thank you to the Nebo Education Foundation for the grant. The new reading materials for our students here at MJHS have been a huge asset to the students so far, and I can only imagine how impactful they will be in the future.  With these, students have discovered new strengths and interests while they are completely engaged with learning. On behalf of the students and teachers at MJHS, Thank you!!” exclaimed Nicollette Anderson, teacher at Mapleton Junior.

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District.  Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need. Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.
