Governor Herbert Gives Accolades to Nebo School District's Native Americans

Governor Herbert said the following about Nebo School District at the Utah Native American Summit held at UVU on August 9, 2016:

"As I said in my State of the State address to the Legislature this past January, I won’t rest until all areas of our state are full participants in Utah’s tremendous economic success. The way to do that is through education, which is why I have set a new statewide goal for Utah to lead the nation in education. Nowhere is education more of a priority than it is in our combined and ongoing efforts to improve life and economic opportunity for Native Americans.

"Fortunately, we are making progress.

"This past May, every Native American senior in the Nebo School District earned his or her high school diploma. Out of those 26 graduates, 23 are going to continue their education at a higher level. These are students who succeeded because the district took a proactive approach with their families and provided the students with resources for tutoring and mentoring. Along with the core subjects, district officials and teachers offered these students opportunities for arts and music, dance and athletics. They encouraged them to embrace their indigenous culture and found ways to incorporate their heritage into the curriculum.

"Nebo is proof-positive that we can do better. The dedicated staff and Native Americans students in that school district are leading by example and showing the rest of us the way."
