Principal Frank Daybell thanked the Nebo School Board of Education for the opportunity to present to the board. He introduced choir director, Dianna Hunt.

Ms. Hunt has about 80 to 90 students involved in the choir. The students delighted the board by singing, “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and “Shooting Star”.

Board member, Randy Boothe, said, “These kids are amazing with your singing talent and all the choreography. Excellent work!”

Ms. Hughes, facilitator and School Community Council member, was excited to speak about all the wonderful things happening at Spring Lake Elementary.

One of Spring Lake’s focus is having an active mentor to the nine teachers that are in their first three years of teaching.  The school is focusing on guided reading by modeling guided reading as well as help write guided reading lessons plans.

Another success is having all technicians trained on the Nebo Plus Program. All students attend the reading lab and getting the same instruction. A new reading technician, who is a retired special education teacher, is also reading recovery trained.

GAINS has been a major part of Spring Lake this year. The GAINS music specialist has made improvements in the integration of arts into every subject.

The SCC provided an incredible Health and Safety Week this year. Parents, Payson police officers, and volunteers were out and about on the walking routes students use to school. Students were given tickets to be put in a drawing for prizes at the end of the week when walking and riding their bikes and scooters to school safely. Not only was safety getting to school rewarded, but students were also given tickets for walking in the halls, getting out of vehicles on the sidewalk side, and even eating their fruits and vegetables at lunch. Spring Lake definitely ordered quite a few more fruits and vegetables that week!

Payson Police Department also put on a safety assembly. This officer answered many questions from the students and it was a great way to start off the week.Throughout the week, thousands of tickets were given to the students. Prizes included water bottles,  board games, jump ropes, balls, to the grand prizes of two bikes!

Principal Daybell committed to hold a Robotics Club put on by the UVU Robotics Program. It was incredible to watch the students build and program robots to do certain tasks.

A big chunk of Spring Lake’s Trustland Funds were spent on technology. All classrooms have document cameras, as well as projectors. The school has purchased quite a few Chromebooks and now have four labs of 35 Chromebooks. Another bulk of the Trustland Funds support the intervention team. These women work with struggling students on a daily basis. These students make wonderful progress  and growth throughout the year working with this team. The students serviced in the lab are monitored. When the students go back to regular class, they are back on grade level.

The SCC is a place for the school administration and teachers to listen to the concerns from the patrons and the community. It is a place for parents to let us know what they feel is working well and not so well within schools.

Congratulations to Lynn Steele for answering this week’s “Where are we Wednesday?” sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
