Crystal Apple Award at Canyon

Submitted by ts on

Jeanette Maughan's peers from Canyon Elementary, voted for her to receive the Horace Mann Crystal Apple Award.  Jeanette's first job was in the Provo School District where she taught first-grade at Timponogous Elementary School.  Many of her students were from other nations.

Three of her students were called Two, Twee and Bambi.

While teaching in Provo, Jeanette began working with Ethna B. Reed in her reading program.  Reed, John Bennion, Provo's Superintendent, and Patty Herrington, former State School Superintendent, became so adept and successful at the reading process and getting all students to read that they began to teach other educators in the state and surrounding states, the reading process.  This ended when Jeanette had children and loved her children more than her profession and decided to stay home to be a mom.

Jeanette has taught the following grades:  first, second, fourth and sixth.  She had the opportunity to be a facilitator at Spanish Fork Middle School.  This experience taught her that she loved teaching more than helping teachers learn how to teach.  She missed the students and the daily warm fuzzes teachers get as students learn and grow.

Jeanette is a natural teacher.  She is bright and understands the teaching process, how students learn and has the patience and foresight to work with all students so they can progress.  Jeanette spends time at home correcting papers, writing response journals, studying core curriculum, writing lesson plans, obtaining equipment to teach with and worring about the students in her classroom. Jeanette is a teacher who makes a difference in the lives of the students she teaches.
