Nebo Success at FCCLA Nationals

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

In July, Nebo School District was well represented at the National Leadership Conference  for FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America). Twelve students, from four high schools traveled to Washington D.C. where they were able to compete in STAR Event competitions, raise awareness and advocate for Family & Consumer Sciences Education at the nation's capitol, see all of the great city sites, and network with over 7,000 FCCLA members from across the country.

Each student first competed at region in February and then state (where they qualified for nationals) in March. They perfected their projects for months with many long hours and lots of hard work and then went on to the national level of competition.

Our Nebo students who attended are:
From MAPLE MOUNTAIN HIGH: Ashley Chidester, Jannelyse Allred, McKenna Holmes, and Haley Andrew.
From PAYSON HIGH: Alyssa Stevenson, Morgan Chappuis, and Ashlee Warren.
From SALEM HILLS HIGH: Rachel Sessions, Audrey Barney, Danna Wilson, and Kelcee Davis.
From SPANISH FORK HIGH: Chelsea Smith.

Collectively, these students earned 8 gold medals and 4 silvers. As a state, Utah had three national 1st place winners, two of those being from Nebo. Haley Andrew (MMHS) won first place for Fashion Construction Occupational category.  Audrey Barney (SHHS) won first place for Fashion Design Senior category. Both of these girls were awarded great scholarships to both the Art Institute and FIDM in California.

Right along with our student successes, two of our amazing advisers were awarded national recognition. Sherry Heaps from Payson High received the Master Adviser award. Laurie Hansen from Salem Hills received the Adviser Mentor award. Both of these teachers are extremely deserving of this recognition for their years of dedication they have put into their FCCLA chapter programs.

This conference was an amazing experience for all. Besides the student and adviser awards, it was the first time that so many of our schools were in at a national conference together. A big congratulations to these students and advisers for an overwhelming win for Nebo!
