Principal Fleming stated, “Salem Junior High is in its third year of existence and the community loves having the junior high here is Salem. We receive lots of parent and community support for the good things that are happening here.”

The School Community Council Chair, Shawna Shelley, spoke about the School Improvement Plan and efforts to use Trustland funds to increase student learning. The first goal is to ensure that each teacher has the technology needed for classroom instruction and interventions. Trustland funds have purchased additional Chromebook labs for student use.

The second goal is to decrease class size in English and math. The Trustland funds helped pay for additional teachers in those areas.

The third goal is to provide professional development for teachers. Trustland funds paid for teacher training, as well as provided professional development days for collaboration with their PLC teams.

The fourth goal is to have a guaranteed and viable curriculum in every subject area as well as the College and Career Readiness programs. Other important items in the School Improvement Plan include Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports for students.

The Salem Junior Hope Squad presented on how they had been chosen among the student body as students whom are trusted and with whom others could talk to about their problems. The Hope Squad members explained their training to identify students having emotional difficulties and what to do to help. Many Hope Squad students shared personal experiences how they helped fellow students by directing them to get help from appropriate adults. The Hope Squad is directed by the counseling staff and has been successful in helping all students feel that they have an advocate among the student body that they can talk to.

The Jazz Band performed two numbers to the delight of all in attendance. The Jazz band is a group of dedicated student musicians who meet every other morning at 7:00 a.m. to practice under the direction of Daniel Stolworthy, the band director at Salem Junior.
