Suzette Hartvigsen Inducted into Nebo Hall of Fame February 2015

Suzette started playing organized sports for Spanish Fork City Recreation when she was 13 years old. This became the beginning of a lifelong love for sports and coaching.  When Suzette entered high school, she tried out for the volleyball and basketball teams and made it in the lineup.  It was such an amazing opportunity to play sports.  Suzette lettered in both volleyball and basketball her junior and senior years at Spanish Fork High. Suzette recalls that she was just an average athlete and remembers telling her mom, “I can see in my brain what I should be doing, but I just can’t get my body to do it.”   When Suzette could no longer play city recreation softball, her mom said, “Why don’t you coach a team?”  Suzette agreed with the idea, but there was one problem. She was too young to coach a team. So her mom signed up as the coach, and Suzette coached the team.  The second season, Suzette’s team took second at the state tournament. Suzette had fallen in love with coaching.

Suzette graduated from Weber State University in 1986 with a major in Physical Education and a minor in English.  During her time in Ogden, she became an assistant coach in both volleyball and basketball at Ogden High School, where she coached for two years.  Suzette earned the Student Teacher of The Year Award from Weber State.

Suzette’s first official teaching and coaching job was at East Carbon High.  In 1987, she began teaching and coaching at Springville High School.  She was so excited to be the volleyball coach for the Red Devil volleyball team!  This started a 23 year coaching career at Springville High for volleyball, basketball and softball.

Suzette loved watching her students improve their athletic talents and abilities.  She has always promoted teamwork, dedication, sportsmanship and hard work.  Her students are encouraged to show respect to all on and off the playing field.

While coaching at Springville High, Suzette was a part of earning many Region Championships and five State Championships.  Suzette enjoyed coaching at Springville High School and loved watching young girls turn into young ladies.  She always believed that girls could be strong, athletic and feminine at the same time.  

Suzette is married to Monelynn Hartvigsen.  Her husband has become her rock and greatest support.  Mone and Suzette have three children, Miah who is an avid softball player, Jordan who loves soccer and golf, and Sophie their fierce little gymnast. 

Suzette now teaches at Salem Junior High where she continues to be a part of athletics by being the athletic director and assistant girls’ basketball coach.  

On behalf of Nebo School District and Springville High, we induct Suzette Hartvigsen into the Nebo Athletic Hall of Fame.  Thank you Suzette for all your hard work and dedication to our community!
