Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants November 2014

Nebo Education Foundation board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues, and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Westside Elementary – Kristine Kirk
Kristine Kirk, first-grade teacher at Westside Elementary said, “I am so overwhelmed with gratitude! I believe so strongly in the importance of providing children with interesting books on their level, and this grant will build a student-managed classroom library to fulfill that need. My students love their independent and buddy reading time, and I’m thrilled to finally give them a library with a variety of books that will be on their level and fun for them to read! Thank you so much for your support! My little readers and I are forever grateful!”

Rees Elementary – Annette Harvey
Annette Harvey, first-grade teacher at Rees Elementary said, “We are so excited to be given this grant for the purchase of MP3 players!  Our students can't wait to use the new MP3 players to listen to stories that will increase their fluency in reading.  These MP3 players will provide at least 40 students with a selection of stories to listen to and get excited about. Thank you so much!”

Mt. Loafer Elementary – Phyllis Peterson & Paul Bradley
“I was thrilled to hear about the approval of our grant for our area rugs. This rug will  enable me to use my classroom space better and help students manage their behavior better while I am instructing them. Thank you so much for your help and generosity!” responded Mr. Bradley, third-grade teacher at Mt. Loafer Elementary.

Phyllis Peterson, kindergarten teacher at Mt. Loafer Elementary said, “I was so excited when we were told we were getting new rugs with matching funds through Nebo Foundation. After many, many years of enjoying a rug and many, many disasters on the rug. You could say my class really needed a new one. These rugs are perfect for kindergarten. They have their very own space for each child. Enough room to stretch but not to touch. I appreciate this so much because it was so needed. Thanks to all that made it happen!!!!!”

Hobble Creek Elementary – Sharon Keliiliki
“I just wanted to thank you and the Nebo Education Foundation so very much for your generosity in helping us fund the 35 ukuleles for Hobble Creek Elementary School. Your thoughtful donation will help me to expand the students’ musical horizons as well as performance skills. When students play the ukulele they will learn music from a variety of genres including folk, popular, and rock. Multi cultural experiences have always been important to me as an educator and I have often used music as it’s gateway. The ukulele will be a means to introducing Hobble Creek Elementary to the beautiful sounds of my Hawaiian culture. These ukuleles will be used by the students in grades 3 through 6, and they will benefit from your donation for years! It is from the bottom of my heart that I truly thank you for your generous donation. The students and I are very excited,” replied Sharon Keliiliki, music specialist at Hobble Creek Elementary.

 Brockbank Elementary – Byron Villaverde
Byron Villaverde, speech and hearing specialist at Brockbank Elementary, said, “We plan to use Story Champs with each of our receptive and expressive language delayed students.  Story Champs will help our students to learn and use complex language structures in a narrative/story based approach.  Story Champs is a fun and engaging method of remediation.”

Maple Mountain High – Dave Jones
