Nebo Youth Provide Thanksgiving Dinner to Needy Families

Kaitlin Hallam and Lindsey Olsen helped provide a Thanksgiving dinner to 40 needy families in the area. The girls partnered with the Utah County 4-H organization to identify families who were in need of assistance through the 4-H Mentoring Program. The Mentoring Program identifies students who need additional help in school and then matches them with another student who can give assistance.

The Mentoring Program is under the direction of Emily Shepherd who spearheaded this year’s event. Approximately 80 students and parents were involved in collecting and packaging the food items during their achievement night activities which included potatoes, gravy, dressing, canned vegetables, sweet potatoes, fresh rolls, a pumpkin pie, and, of course, a fresh turkey with a pan to cook it in. All ingredients were donated by local parents and students.

Kaitlin and Lindsey raised 40 turkeys as part of their high school agricultural experience and then donated the birds to the Thanksgiving project. The girls processed the birds, packaged them, and helped fill meal boxes. Once the boxes were filled, the packages were delivered to needy families.
The volunteers replied, “The response by those receiving the gifts was humbling. This was an incredible opportunity for our youth to help people who really are in need.”
Nebo School District recognizes the value of such programs and co-sponsors the 4-H programs in many of the schools in the district.
