Nebo Bests ACT Scores

Utah keeps top ACT spot in nation among states testing ALL students and Nebo bests Utah.

In 2013, nine states had all high school juniors take the ACT college entrance exam and Utah students placed first in the nation among that group. In 2014, an even dozen states had full participation in ACT tests. Utah students still hold the highest composite score among those 12 states, according to data released this week by ACT.

Nebo students bests Utah’s composite score and the nations. Nebo’s composite score is 21.5 compared to Utah’s 20.8.

“All Utah students, their parents and their teachers can take pride in this achievement,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Martell Menlove. “What makes this report so significant is that it includes all Utah students. The number of Utah Hispanic students taking the ACT has nearly tripled in the past five years. The number of Pacific Islander students taking the test has nearly doubled in four years. These scores represent our school population as a whole, not just those who plan to attend college.”

Utah’s average composite score in 2014 was 20.8, up from 20.7 in 2013. At the same time the number of students taking the test went from 34,514 to 35,074. Nationally, the average composite score went from 20.9 to 21.0. But only 57 percent of students nationally, on average, take the ACT, mostly students who are college bound.

In 2014 Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming tested all of their high school juniors. Illinois, for the second year in a row, came in second to Utah with an average composite score of 20.7.
