30,000 Items Donated for Food Drive -- Answer to Wednesday's Challenge

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

Diamond Fork Junior High Food Drive is a long standing tradition within the school. The food drive began back when this junior high was Spanish Fork Middle School. The Food Drive has become a necessary part of the culture. Everyone gets into the action from students to parents, to all of the faculty and staff at the school. This year's lofty goal was 25,000 items. Diamond Fork students exceeded that total by over 5,000 items.

Diamond Fork’s Character Education class organizes and coordinates the efforts. The students count, store, and make multiple deliveries to local food pantries. Diamond Fork students are thrilled that they are the #1 local contributor to Tabitha's Way in Spanish Fork. The junior high school is also a large contributor to the local Utah Food and Care Coalition.

Fifth-period classes compete for prizes such as pizza parties, root beer float parties, and candy bars. The students and staff are quick to say that the parties are not the reason they donate food and other items.

The students do it to help others in need. There are many people in our own neighborhoods who don't have enough to eat. The students emulate one of the five core values as they practice compassion for others.

The school lives by the motto: “When we have an abundance, it is our obligation to help others.” It's a good feeling.

Fox 13 News came and covered the event. Congratulations to Pam Vincent for knowing this week's Wednesday Challenge Sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
