Submitted by lana.hiskey on

Sierra Bonita had a delightful surprise on Wednesday, April 17. The Utah Office of Education Superintendent, Martell Menlove, and Utah School Board of Education member, Tami Pyfer, dropped in to see Sierra Bonita’s “Seussical the Musical”.

This illustrious groups was welcomed to “Whoville” by Principal Mike Larsen

Under the direction of Janna Slye, a special education teacher, the school’s stage was transformed into a magical set. From one who has seen “Seussical the Musical” in Chicago, the artistry and costumes at Sierra Bonita rivaled the set in Chicago. Many talented educators and volunteers were involved in making this a special production. Why all the effort?

Sierra Bonita celebrates learning! Poetry winners are:

Superintendent Menlove was moved by the children as they performed and read poetry. He thanked the teachers, staff, and principal for all their efforts in behalf of children. He said the only thing more interesting than watching the children perform was watching their parents behind the cameras. “Reading is important!” said Superintendent Menlove. He is grateful to receive the laminated poems and will put them in his office.

The third grade classes performed a musical number “Read Me a Memory”

When asked about the celebration, Utah School Board member, Tami Pyfer, said, “We want to encourage all to read. This is all about making sure students have critical skills in reading, writing, science, and mathematics. We love to support educating students.”

“It was such an honor having Superintendent Menlove and Mrs. Tami Pyfer attend our awards assembly.  I realize they have such busy schedules so for them to take time to visit Sierra Bonita is amazing,” stated Janna.

Principal Mike Larsen said, “The assembly today was a remarkable opportunity to honor and celebrate the achievements and excellence of the students of Sierra Bonita Elementary. We were inspired by the poetry written and shared by our student authors, and the singing and dancing performances of our students were outstanding. We are grateful for the inspiring words shared from Superintendent Menlove. We express our appreciation to Superintendent Menlove, State Board of Education member Tami Pyfer, Superintendent Rick Nielsen, Julie Warren, and Lana Hiskey for supporting and sharing in this remarkable experience with our students, staff members, and community.”

Congratulations to Melissa Heaton, English teacher at Mapleton Junior, for the correct answer to Wednesday's Challenge. Sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
