Mt. Loafer Receives Grant from Nebo Education Foundation

Mt. Loafer has had a tradition of focusing on the fine arts; it began with Principal Roger Bushman.  He purchased 15 electronic pianos and hired a piano teacher. Each student, in grades third through sixth, had a half-hour each week of piano lessons.  Through the wear and tear of many years of use, the piano lab is no longer available to students. Our community wants to keep music alive in our school.  By purchasing ukuleles and xylophones, all students will once again receive weekly instruction in reading music and playing pitched instruments; giving Mt. Loafer youngsters the many benefits of music education, helping them to be better students, and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music.

We believe that kids thrive when given the chance to learn and play music. Putting an instrument into their hands improves the quality of their education and their lives. The window is brief, and all students deserve a chance to play music in school!

In addition to the music, Mt. Loafer teachers realize that more exercise is needed for our students' health and well-being. Physical activity has many benefits for children in developing physical and mental health.

By purchasing more tumbling mats for our gym, our PE specialist and the classroom teachers will be able to provide fun, noncompetitive activities, maybe aerobics, yoga, and similar fitness programs that all students can do together.  The desired result is to enhance our students' brain development by giving them more opportunities for physical movement and exercise.

Brenda Betteridge said, “Everyone at our school has committed to getting healthy, in so many different ways, so being able to get down and use the mats and do floor work on our hard tile floors is just what the doctor ordered. Many, many thanks.”
