Mt. Loafer Elementary suggested reading for grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th
Compiled by Gloria Waddoups, Librarian
This list was compiled from Mt. Loafer Elementary students and local
elementary librarians’ favorite titles. Since reading and interest
levels vary within grades, this list is not leveled for each grade, but
divided into two categories: chapter books and picture books.
We encourage families to share these titles in many different ways, including
reading independently, group/shared reading (could include journal keeping
to aid recall), and just READING anytime and anywhere!
The American Library Association (www.ala.org)
suggests the following procedure for jointly choosing books with children:
“Go to the library and find one or more of the books listed here.
Let your child look at the front and back covers of the books and thumb
through the books. Ask whether the books interest your child. If so, check
out the books. If not, find another book …and repeat the process
until your child is happy.” As you may have already discovered,
your children’s motivation for reading is closely related to their
involvement in choosing the book!

Many of these books have sequels and many of these authors have written
other books. The back side of the first page often lists other books by
the same author.
Help is also available on the web. Locally, the Children’s Literature
Association of Utah (CLAU) at www.clau.org
