Improvement Plan 2006 - 2007
1.
Math Education
Mt. Loafer will provide training for teachers and materials for math
instruction at each grade level. We will also communicate math strategies
and expectations to parents using our current math program, MathLand.
Supplies and manipulative for MathLand will be purchased.
2.
Balanced Literacy
Students at Mt. Loafer will increase their writing and reading ability
through balanced literacy. To accomplish this, struggling readers will
be instructed using the I Can Read Program. Mt. Loafer will also provided
summer school for students reading below grade level. Additional leveled
books for guided reading instruction will be purchased, as well as books
for the take home library and Reading Counts tests.

Gifted and Talented Programs
We will provided extension classes for identified Gifted and Talented
students. These students will be identified through testing and teacher
recommendation.
4.
Communication
Parents will be informed in advance of upcoming events and policies
at Mt. Loafer Elementary through a monthly newsletter and a current
web page. A school handbook will be published and distributed at the
beginning of the year.
Title: Math Education
Specific Objective: Provide training and materials for math instruction
at grade level.
Steps:
1. Provide training for all new teachers in our current math program.
2. Assign one teacher per grade level to assist teachers at that level
and coordinate math instruction.
3. Teachers in first and second grades, will meet with parents at least
once a year to demonstrate and discuss math strategies. Older grades
will survey parents as to their needs and have parent meetings if needed.
4. Purchase supplies and manipulative for MathLand.

Balanced Literacy
Specific Objective: Mt. Loafer students will increase their writing
and reading ability through balanced literacy.
Steps:
1.
Continue to develop the guided reading library, take home library, and
Reading Counts tests.
2. Expand the“I Can Read Tutoring” for struggling students
by training volunteers.
3. Summer school will be available for students reading below grade
level.
4. Teachers will continue to be trained in phonemic awareness and phonics
instruction.
5. At least 2 workshops will be offered for parents of children that
are reading below grade level.
Title: Gifted and Talented
Specific Objective: Mt. Loafer will continue to develop a school program
for Gifted and Talented students.
Steps:
1. Students in third grade will be tests on the SAGES.
2 . Pull-out classes for identified students will be continued.

Specific Objective: Parents will be informed of upcoming events, and
policies at Mt. Loafer Elementary.
Steps:
1. A school handbook will be distributed to families at the beginning
of the year.
2. Mt. Loafer’s web page will be updated.
3. A monthly newsletter will be sent home.
