Language Arts Core
Full year, two class periods. These classes focus on effective reading, writing and communication skills. Students use writing strategies to create several writing projects, including narrative, persuasive, research paper, personal and business letters, and poetry. In the computer lab, students are given to opportunity to type essays and use software and the Internet for research. Independent reading programs and classroom novel studies are designed to reinforce important active reading strategies.

English 8
This is a well-rounded course focusing on the basic communication skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and especially thinking. Students will enhance and practice these skills by studying units in literature, vocabulary, grammar, and writing.

English 9
English 9 continues the skill of reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening.  Emphasis is placed on mastery of spelling/vocabulary, writing, interpreting, literature and poetry.  Grammar studies will focus on language usage.  Students need a looseleaf (not spiral) notebook and looseleaf paper.

English 9 Honors
Students must have excellent comprehension skills.  Literature, composition, vocabulary and grammar are interlaced to meet Utah’s curriculum requirements.  The pace of assignments is accelerated.  This class is a survey of English literature and requires extra time outside of class.
