Nebo School District has two domains for email, one for staff and one for students.
Staff Domain - nebo.edu
Employees have email accounts in the staff domain which is nebo.edu. The staff domain's WebMail entrance is http://staff.nebo.edu/. You can use https://staff.nebo.edu/ to encrypt communication if you're on a non-secure network. This will slow down communication slightly and hence should probably not be used within the district.
Student Domain - students.nebo.edu
The student domain is students.nebo.edu. Its
WebMail entrance is
http://students.nebo.edu/.
Employees have two options for accessing email: WebMail and POP mail. Using both can be confusing so you should probably choose one method.
Students may only use WebMail.
WebMail
When using WebMail, email always resides on the server. Therefore, it can be used from school, home, or almost any other computer connected to the Internet.
WebMail is easy to use and there is no setup necessary. All you need to do is point your web browser to the WebMail entrance for your domain and enter your login information.
POP Mail
POP mail uses a server/client architecture. The server delivers the mail. The client runs on the user's computer.
POP mail uses the metaphor of a post office (hence the name Post Office Protocol). The user has a post office mailbox as specified by their email address. The user authenticates by using a login name and password. The user has a post office where the mailbox resides (POP server) and a preferred mail drop off box (SMTP server).
When a user wants to read their mail, the POP client runs down to the post office, collects the mail, and brings it back to the user's computer. When the user writes a letter, the POP client runs it down to the drop off box.
POP mail has both pros and cons.
POP mail is not available for students.
All POP mail clients have five common configuration settings. Each client may use slightly different names when referring to these settings, but they are essentially the same. They are as follows:
EMail Address = firstname.lastname@nebo.edu
The address people use when sending you email.
Login Name and Password = firstname.lastname and your secret password
The login name and password are used to log into the POP server.
Most POP mail clients allow the password to either be saved or typed in each time mail is retrieved. Use caution when saving your password. If anyone has access to your computer, they can easily read your mail on your computer and forge your name on email they send from your computer.
POP Server = staff.nebo.edu
This is the address of the machine the POP mail client connects to for email retrieval.
SMTP Server * = staff.nebo.edu
This is the address of the machine the POP mail client uses for sending, or relaying, email.
Leave Copy on Server
Unless you plan on also using WebMail, your POP mail client should be configured to delete mail after it has been retrieved from the server. Otherwise, your InBox on the server will fill up and eventually your storage limits will be reached.
* Our SMTP server can only be used on our district network. You must contact
your local ISP (Internet Service Provider) when configuring POP mail on a different
network.
