Mapleton Junior High Hosts 5th Annual Special Education Sports Fair Extravaganza

September 29, Mapleton Junior High hosted yet another successful sports day for all special needs children from the junior high schools in Nebo School District.  Under the direction of Coach Linda Lewis and Special Education teacher Jo Edan Parker, the event provided a day of sports and fair activities for nearly 300 students. 

Nebo School District Celebrates National School Lunch Week

Mark your calendars – October 10-14 is National School Lunch Week!  Nebo School District will be celebrating with the theme “School Lunch – Let’s Grow Healthy”.  Nebo School District works hard to provide your children with balanced, nutritious meals that will supply them with the nutrients they need to be strong and healthy. 

Nebo serves about 16,000 meals a day which meet the federal nutrition standards under the federally-funded National School Lunch Program.  Your children can come in to eat balanced meals which:

United Way’s Day of Caring – Donates Service to Nebo School District’s Students

United Way’s annual Day of Caring showed how local volunteers can unite and impact their community in a large way on Wednesday, September 8. Thirty-six service projects were performed across Utah County with more than 40,500 hours of completed service estimated.

The Adobe Corporation sent a team of individuals to partner with Nebo School District and give service to Nebo’s summer camp facility, Shadow Mountain.

Adobe Corporation helped with painting decks, cleaning of the archery unit, and making a suitable staircase on the trail at Shadow Mountain.

Nebo School District’s Captains' Fall Academy

On September 20, 2011, Nebo School District held its first Fall Academy of the quarterly Captains’ Academy for the 2011-2012 season. The purpose of the Captains’ Academy is to promote leadership and sportsmanship between Nebo School District’s five high schools. These Academies have proven to promote better relations through student leaders and athletes.

This Fall Captains’ Academy included leaders from girls’ soccer, football, cheer, boys’ golf, student council, volleyball, girls’ tennis, and girls’ and boys’ cross country.

35th Annual Nebo Tournament of the Bands

Saturday, September 24, 2011, marked the 35th Nebo Tournament of Bands held at Payson High School.  The event is co-hosted by Payson High School and their band boosters as well as the Utah Music Educators Association. Twenty-six high school marching bands from throughout the state of Utah participated in this year's annual event.  All high schools in Nebo School District participated.  Thousands turned out throughout the day to support their favorite bands!

Marine Jazz Combo Band Rocks Payson High School

On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, a Marine Jazz Combo stationed in San Diego paid a visit to Payson High to perform and put on a clinic for approximately 150 students.  Music students from Payson High and Payson Junior High attended the hour-long program.  The combo demonstrated improvisation techniques and performed jazz standard tunes for the students. 

The purpose of the tour is to let students know that a Marine Band might be an option after high school. The band discussed a variety of music careers available to musicians and answered students' questions.           

Superintendent Rick Nielsen visits Canyon Elementary

Kindergarten students at Canyon Elementary were treated with a wonderful surprise by Superintendent Rick Nielsen. He wished them well on their first day and read a story about sharing everything in kindergarten.

One of the kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Menlove, reported, "The Superintendent is a wonderful story teller."

Superintendent Nielsen’s focus is on students. Whenever a meeting is called or decisions are made, the question, "Is this best for students?" is always considered.

Nebo School District Qualifies for Energy Star Rating

The State Energy Program and Governor Herbert recognized Nebo School District for participating in an energy management program to benchmark buildings. Nebo School District as been busy this past year reporting utility information and upgrades on each of the older schools and buildings as well as the new construction. The reporting was made possible through a partnership between the Utah State Government and the Cadmus Group.

Krystal Baker Selected to Attend National Journalism Conference

Krystal Baker, English and journalism teacher at Payson High School, was selected as one of the 165 journalism teachers nationwide and 1 of 3 from Utah to attend hsj.org, a national and advanced journalism conference, this summer in Reno, Nevada.

The journalism teachers were urged to be bold, lead, and innovate. The conference is part of an ongoing national effort to grow an informed citizenry that can discern quality news and create multi-media youth journalists.
