Students Experience Hands-on STEM Objects

Students at Spanish Fork Junior High had a chance to experience hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) education during their career and college course. Tiffany Myers, Career, Technology, Education (CTE) instructor, demonstrated different healthcare concepts and careers in her class.

Using a STEM education kit donated by Central Utah Clinic and the Utah STEM Action Center, Myers gave her students a hands-on experience. The kit included materials considered to be luxury items or costly for teachers and schools to purchase.

"Focus on Students" is Superintendent Nielsen's Motto

“‘Focus on Students’ is what we are all about,” said Superintendent Rick Nielsen. This is the second meeting this year that Superintendent Nielsen has reached out to high school student leaders.

Representatives from each high school visited with the Superintendent and Secondary Director, John Degraffenried on topics such as: sportsmanship, technology, and the 5X5 schedule. Superintendent Nielsen kept the gathering to one hour so the students could get back to their schools and activities.

But don’t just take our word for it, students who eat school breakfast have better attendance, behavior, test scores and less tardiness as reported by the Food Research and Action Council.

Students request lawmakers visit classrooms

Student council members from Sierra Bonita Elementary had the opportunity to visit with Senator Deidre Henderson from Spanish Fork at the Utah State Capitol. The visit was prompted by some ideas these students had about lawmakers’ involvement in education. After conducting a survey of educators and school administrators, sixth grade students wrote an essay stating reasons why it would be beneficial for lawmakers to spend time in schools. The goal was to write a bill requiring legislators to spend a designated day annually in schools and call it Legislator Education Day.

Nebo Title VII student performing group "Wasatch Eagles" were invited to sing for Senators... click through to watch a video.

Nebo Title VII student performing group "Wasatch Eagles" were invited to sing for Senators on American Indian Caucus Day on 2/12/15. We took a bus of American Indian students to the capital to watch 2 bills go through legislation, met tribal leaders and took a tour. The song is called the "Deer Song" composed by Jennifer Kreisberg.

During halftime of the Payson High School basketball game, Joe Worthen was inducted into the Nebo Athletic Hall of Fame surrounded by a large group of family and friends in attendance.

There are only 2 weeks left to register for the SheTech Explorer Event which will be held March 13th at UVU.  Registration closes March 4th.  Hurry to sign up as classes are filling up.

Calling all high school girls-come and interact with different companies that have technology at their core and see if it’s right for you!  Many companies will be there with fun interactive products to play with.   Companies include Ancestry, US Synthetics, Rockwell Collins, MaritzCX, Ebay, IM Flash, Disney, BD Medical, Merit Medical, The Aquarium, The Leonardo and many more!

Brookside Presents to Nebo School Board of Education

Principal Alicia Rudd addressed the Nebo School Board of Education and introduced the School Community Chair, Shannon Pexton and music directors, Tami Evans and LeAnn Andrews. 

The three main areas of focus for Brookside Elementary are mathematics, literacy and the arts. Brookside teachers participate in numerous professional development opportunities. Some extracurricular activities developed include reading and writing clubs, chess club, orchestra, choir, and even a homework lab. Technology has also been an emphasis.
