Asst. Coach:  Eric Fraley, C 505-916-6006, eric.a.fraley@gmail.com

Schedule

The weekday schedule is limited to Spanish Fork and Diamond Fork Jr. High Students only.  You must be in 7th – 9th grade and currently enrolled at one of the two schools.  You must maintain a 2.0 GPA as well as good disciplinary status in order to participate in these practices and competitions.  Official junior high meets will be on weekdays.  Saturday tournaments for K-9 are run by club or youth programs and participants will be independent of school teams (see next page).

Six sanctioned jr. high district competitions will be on the following Tuesdays:

TUESDAY, NOV. 10TH, 5:30 PM @ MAPLE MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL
I mistakenly told the team today at practice that the meet was at the Mapleton Rec Center.  It IS at Maple Mtn. High as noted on the schedule.  Arrive by 5:00 pm to be accounted for, to warm up, and to watch the MM high school team, which will be practicing until at least 5:15 pm.  The meet will begin as soon as participants are paired.  In this format, wrestlers may wrestle as often as they wish; I have requested that all SF-DF wrestlers compete at least twice.  After the second match (or later), please sign out with one of the coaches before departing.  As there may be several wrestlers competing at once, and there will only be 3 coaches - Eric, Tyler, and me (Derek is ill) - any parents who are experienced wrestlers are encouraged to assist in the coaching.  Wrestler participation is optional but encouraged.

TUESDAY, NOV. 17TH, 5:00 PM @ JUAB JR. HIGH SCHOOL This meet has been moved up one day.  The bus for the entire team (all are expected to attend) will be leaving Spanish Fork JHS at 3:00 pm.  Wrestling should go from 5:00-8:00 pm, with a return between 8:30-9:00 pm.

TUESDAY, DEC. 1ST, 5:30 PM @ MAPLE MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL Similar format to Nov. 10th, with identical expectations.

TUESDAY, DEC. 15TH, 3:00 pm @ MAPLETON JR. HIGH SCHOOL This is a dual meet, for which there will be an early school dismissal.  The starting team will be comprised of 1-2 wrestlers in each weight class, and transportation will be provided by school bus.  As this is an early school dismissal, it is not certain whether the entire practice team will be allowed to go to the meet; if not, those who do not travel on the bus are welcome to travel to cheer on the team.

TUESDAY, JAN. 5TH - HOME - 5:30 PM @ SPANISH FORK HIGH SCHOOLSimilar format to the previous two informal meets, except that we are the host.  The expectation is that all SF-DF wrestlers will attend and participate.

TUESDAY, JAN. 19TH, 4:00 PM @ PAYSON JR. HIGH SCHOOL This is the final meet, which will be our starting team, 1-2 participants in each weight class, with the rest of the team there to support the team.  We will leave from Spanish Fork JHS in a bus at 3:00 pm and return approximately 9:00 pm.

Saturday tournaments

For those wrestlers and parents who seek additional or a higher level of competition, these “open” tournaments are organized by clubs around the state under the auspices of USA Wrestling.  Because they are sanctioned by the national wrestling governing body, participants in these Saturday tournaments will need to purchase a one-year USA WRESTLING MEMBERSHIP card (includes activity insurance).  Most of these tournaments will require a Utah USA Wrestling League Insurance Card for $10.75 or a USA National Card for $37.00.  These are both one-year cards and are good until August of 2010.

To establish an individual account and an athlete’s membership, use this link.  For further information on regional and national wrestling tournaments, camps, clinics, visit:  http://www.themat.com/

After you register, print out a membership card from the online center.  Online registration is required for some tournaments; otherwise you may register on site prior to weigh-in (see below).  Sites will post weigh-in times, where individuals will be placed in age-appropriate classifications, as well as the meet start time (which may be differentiated by age or grade). Parents or their designees are responsible to transport to and from the site; coaches do not have the liability to assist with transportation.  There may or may not be a program coach in attendance; plan to coach your athlete or to have an adult there who will be encourage your athlete’s best participation as well as most sportsmanlike demeanor.

Club duals will be combined team events (not school-sanctioned) with the best individuals from the towns of Spanish Fork, Mapleton, and Springville as part of the Champions Wrestling Club.  Wrestlers who do not participate in the dual meet tournaments can wrestle in any of the open meets.  Go to the website:  www.championswrestling.com for more information on in-season and post-season tournaments and practices.

General Information

REGISTRATION:  Forms are available at the main office or on the school website.  Completed registrations with the $45 fee attached need to be delivered on or before the first practice (Monday, October 26th). Sign up for the "jr. high team"; ignore the additional registration listing for the club and other school teams.  In addition to the basic fee, if an athlete already has a singlet, he may elect to use it or purchase a new one.  Wrestlers who do not already own a singlet need to include the additional $35 for singlet and t-shirt, which we will order at a group discount.  If there are financial limitations which would affect participation, please contact your school principal or athletic director.

SCHOOL PERMISSION WAIVER:  Parents must also fill out and sign an athletic permission form available from the main office or on the NEBO District website.

PHYSICAL:  Students who have a current form on file are all set.  If a student has previously submitted a form, then parents may update the information and re-submit.  If a physical has not been filed with the district, a physician must evaluate the student and sign the school form.

INSURANCE:  For $10 through www.utahwrestling.org, each wrestler must be registered through USA Wrestling for insurance which covers participation in all matches and tournaments.  Those wrestlers who continue with USA Wrestling events during and beyond the season will receive a $10 rebate on their year-round USA Wrestling insurance ($37).

FIRST PRACTICE / PARENT ORIENTATION:  The first full practice will be held from 3:15 – 5:15 pm at the Spanish Fork Jr. High wrestling room.  Diamond Fork students are responsible for walking, biking, or getting a ride to SFJHS in time for the beginning of practice.  Registration which has not yet been completed and any parent questions will be answered in person at 5:00 pm in the wrestling room (attendance optional if the required forms have been submitted).

DAILY PRACTICE:  Practice on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday will be from 3:15 – 5:15 pm.  As Wednesday is an “early out” day, practice will be from 2:30 – 4:15 pm.

ATTENDANCE:  If a student will be absent from school, please email one or both coaches in addition to the main office.  If the student is at school that day, but needs to miss practice for a personal or family reason, email the coaches, preferably in advance.  Attendance at every practice is expected, but we will work with individuals and families as conflicts arise.

EQUIPMENT:  Students are responsible for providing their own wrestling shoes and headgear.  Optional gear may include knee pads and antibacterial soap to combat fungal issues.  Students should be prepared to shower at school after practice.  For best hygiene, it is recommended that students do not wear the same shirt, shorts, and socks until they have washed prior to the next use.  If the local sporting goods store does not carry wrestling gear, there are a number of online companies which can be found through Google (under “wrestling equipment”).

SCHOOL MEETS:  The season schedule is being confirmed and will be available on the school website as soon as it is finalized.  In general, the large meets will be on the weekend, with a few “fun” matches on designated Tuesdays (approximately 5:00 – 8:00 pm).  Certain Saturdays will be school meets, either a dual meet tournament (with selected wrestlers representing each weight class) or an open meet where anyone can participate.

INDEPENDENT OR CLUB TOURNAMENTS:  On Saturdays where there is not a designated school meet, there will be tournaments which are open to any competitor.  However, as there will be no school association with these meets, wrestlers are responsible for getting themselves registered as well as arranging for their own transportation to and from the site.  There may or may not be a school coach in attendance.

TRANSPORTATION:  The district will provide transportation to and from designated school meets.  Expect Tuesday tri-meets to leave the school around 3:00 pm and return between 8:00 – 9:00 pm.  Saturday meets will leave early morning (approximately 6:00 – 7:00 am) and return late afternoon or early evening.  In order to coordinate team arrangements and determine attendance, students will be transported to the match as a group; parents in attendance at school meets may transport their students directly home from the site,

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES:  Wrestlers will be responsible for managing their individual nutrition and exercise programs.  We will provide guidance as to proper management, but we will not encourage weight loss or gain.  However, there are designated weight classes for certain meets, and it will be up to the individual competitor to establish safe and reasonable norms.  However, if an individual exceeds recommended guidelines or seeks to establish his weight in an unsafe manner, the coaches may need to establish certain requirements which may include limiting an individual’s participation until safe guidelines are maintained.
