Course Descriptions:

Advertising/ Promotion

This course provides the student with an understanding of basic marketing principles and training for entry-level job positions in the exciting, constantly changing service fields of advertising and display. Competing successfully as a specialist requires competency in human relations, communication, selling, management, mathematics, and budgeting. One should also understand the appropriate and productive use of display space, television, radio, newspaper, and other media. Specific training helps the student create, product, and accurately evaluate the efficiency of the various props, exhibits, and advertising strategies. Students taking marketing classes should have the opportunity to participate in the DECA Organization (student marketing leadership association). DECA related activities and curriculum can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.

Fashion Merchandising

The Fashion Merchandising course is an introductory course that teaches the concepts of entry-level business and fashion fundamentals. The following list of skill standards prepares the student in fashion merchandising with the fundamentals of: Basic Fashion and Business Concepts: textile fibers and yarns, garment styles and parts, retail merchandise categories, designing and producing apparel, retail business fundamentals, and fashion promotion. Students taking marketing classes should have the opportunity to participate in the DECA organization (Student Marketing Leadership Association). DECA related activities and curriculum can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.

Marketing A

An introductory course that will teach concepts of entry-level business and marketing functions. The following skill standards will prepare the student in Marketing, marketing and business fundamentals, selling, financing, product/service planning, information management, purchasing, distribution, pricing, promotion, risk management, career development, economics, communications, human relations, marketing math, and marketing operations. Student taking marketing classes should have the opportunity to participate in DECA (An Association of Marketing Students). DECA related activities and curriculum can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.

Leadership Management

Students will understand the concepts of leadership and the supervisory roles, planning, decision-making, group and organizational dynamics, and functions in an organization. This class teaches how to be an effective leader. Concepts of goal setting, motivation, time management, and other interpersonal skills are taught. Classmates with these skills could become very effective within the student leadership organizations in the high schools. Students may be eligible to receive three (3) credits of concurrent enrollment at a local college if the student completes both semester A and B courses

Leadership Principles

This course is recommended for students who are elected student body or class officers, organization or club president/officers, or are considering running for one of these offices. Student leaders have great ambitions and enthusiasm for the school and student body—but this alone does not create success. This class teaches how to be an “effective” leader. Concepts of goal setting, motivation, team building, time management, conflict resolution, dealing with stress, and much more are discussed. Students may be eligible to receive three (3) credits of concurrent enrollment at Utah Valley State College.
