Course Descriptions:

Accounting I

Students will develop skill beginning with an understanding of the basic elements and concepts of double-entry accounting systems. Skills will include a knowledge of the accounting cycle, entering transactions in journals, posting to ledgers, compiling end-of-period worksheets, adjusting and payroll systems, and writing and communication examples. Proficiency of automated accounting procedures is encouraged.

Accounting II

Students will develop advanced skills that build upon those acquired in Accounting I. Additional accounting skills such as reconciling uncollectible accounts, calculating depreciation on assets, interpreting financial information, and calculating notes and interest will be developed. Computerized accounting will again be incorporated as an essential tool where resources are available. Prerequisites: Accounting I

Business Communication I

Business Communications impacts all aspects of our lives. This introductory course will teach students to communicate in a clear, courteous, concise, and correct manner on both personal and professional levels. Competency will be developed in oral, written, interpersonal, technological and employment. Listening skills will be incorporated throughout the semester. The overriding goal is to provide students with a solid communication base so they are able to communicate effectively.

Business Communication II

This advanced course will build upon the skills acquired in Business Communications I. Students will focus on additional methods of constructive communication skills. Competency will again be developed in oral, written, social, technological, employment, and organizational communication with listening skills incorporated throughout the semester. The goal is to provide students with a practical, proficient portfolio consisting of a resume, job application, and an oral presentation. Students will complete the course with a greater understanding of the impact of technology and the need for effective communication skills to advance in a business career.

Business Management

This Business Management course seeks to develop sound management skills within students, as management plays a role in any future employment opportunity. Students are able to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate data from the other functional areas of business (e.g., marketing, finance, accounting, and production) as well as focus on managing one's time and the time and talents of others. Effective management requires decision-making abilities, long-range planning knowledge, human relations expertise, and motivational skills. Students learn leadership skills and are able to select appropriate management styles. Finally, students are taught current technological applications and the effect international trade has on management style and decisions.

Business Law

Students will gain an understanding of the law as it relates to them currently and the implications of the law in their future lives as well as the lives of their family and friends. They will also work to gain an understanding of basic legal vocabulary.

The course will include an understanding of the court system at the local, state, and national level. Students will gain an understanding of contract law, their rights and responsibilities as citizens, utilization of financial transactions, employment and agency relationships, and the understanding of the regulations governing different types of business organizations. As a culminating project, students will participate in one or more mock trials.

Students will explore Economics, Marketing, Desktop Publishing, and Web Page Design. Computers will be used as an integral part of this class to incorporate and review these business concepts. Prerequisite: Keyboarding I and/or Keyboarding Applications

Desktop Publishing

This one-semester course provides skill development in the electronic procedures of producing and editing publications. Students will create, format, illustrate, design, edit/revise, and print publications. Improved productivity of electronically produced newsletters, flyers, brochures, reports, advertising materials, and other publications are emphasized. Proofreading, document composition, and communication competencies are also included. Prerequisites: Word Processing 1

Economics – Business

This course focuses on the study of economic problems and the methods by which societies solve them. Characteristics of the market economy of the United States and its function in the world and methods of applying economics to one's life will be explored.

Computer Technology

This is an introduction to computer application software that encompasses document processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. An understanding of ethics and use of operating systems, information resources, and electronic mail is included. Skills gained will be demonstrated by creating a project for a different content area. Prerequisites: Basic keyboarding skills.

Electronic Spreadsheets and Database

This course applies advanced concepts and principles relating to electronic spreadsheets, databases, and PC operating systems. The skills gained will be used to store data, interpret data, and create reports that would be used in making business decisions. E-mail and Internet will be used to electronically send and receive communications, research industry information, and reinforce understanding of business terminology. Prerequisites: Computer Technology

Business Web Page Design

This semester course provides students with advanced Internet skills and techniques as well as a major emphasis on beginning Web page design. Students will explore resources of the Internet and its tools through the use of e-mail, search engines and browsers. HTML and Web publishing software will be used to create, format, illustrate, design and edit Web pages. Prerequisites: Computer Technology

Advanced Business Web Page design

This course provides skill development in the electronic procedures of producing, editing, publishing, and maintaining documents on the Internet. Web publishing software and HTML are used to develop the competencies of creating, formatting, illustrating, designing, editing/revising, and publishing documents on the World Wide Web. Proofreading, document composition, design composition and communication competencies are included. Prerequisites: Business Web Page Design

Word Processing Basic

In this introductory course, students learn basic word processing skills. These invaluable skills include editing and proofreading documents, performing standard file management procedures, keyboarding, and creating applicable business documents to simulate a real-life job environment. Prerequisites: Keyboarding

Word Processing

This course builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired in Word Processing. Students will learn the advanced features of word processing software. They will improve productivity by using the most efficient, timesaving methods to produce documents. Emphasis will be placed on the creation and enhancement of business documents.
