Victory Assembly

The first victory assembly of the year was held this Wednesday. As is our tradition at Cherry Creek, it all started with a "victory lap" of the Leaders of the Month and Top Croc Award students--and, of course--Crocky!

During the assembly, we celebrated those students who earned awards and those who received croc cards. The WIG student leaders gave us an update on how we're doing with our attendance goal. So far this year, 85% of students have been on time 9 out of every 10 days. That's so close to our goal of 90% of students being on time every 9/10 days. Parents, help our kids get to school on time so they can start off the day ready to learn. Thanks for your effort and support with this goal!

A few brave teachers introduced the "Cherry Creek's Got Talent" opportunity to try out for a performance slot on Leadership Day. They showed their dancing talent, and got everyone involved and excited to show their talents.

One last special highlight of the assembly was having guests from KSL News Radio and Zion's Bank in Salt Lake City come to award Mrs. Golding with the Teacher Feature this week for all of Utah.

Cherry Creek Used as Film Set for TV Series

This week, film crews were at Cherry Creek to shoot scenes for a new TV series, Yellowstone. The series is written and executive produced by Oscar-nominated Taylor Sheridan, and will star Kevin Costner. Costner wasn't involved in the scenes being filmed at our school, but it was exciting to see the North gym and one of our empty classrooms get set up as a film set. The show follows the experiences of John Dutton (Costner) who owns the largest ranch in the United States, and the legal, political, and cultural struggles that come along with living on America's frontier. We understandably weren't permitted to take any pictures of the film set or the actors, but we're excited to play a small part in this TV series! Check out this article by the Salt Lake Tribune for more details about the show:

Mr. Earl Still Has His Marbles

Last year, Noah Jones came to school with some marbles. I proceeded to tell him all of my memories of playing marbles as a kid. His grandpa had given him some cool marbles, so I told him I'd bring some marbles and play him a game or two. It all snowballed from there. More kids brought marbles to play with. Now there are quite a few of my students who play marbles every day at recess. I love playing marbles with my students. It gets them excited about having fun and playing with students they might not normally play with. It's a timeless game spanning the ages. We love recess and the time it gives us to build friendships and sharpen the saw!

Fifth graders have been learning about Native Americans in class and got to enjoy a special presentation from Mrs. Beyal last week. We learned that there is a lot of Native American influence in Utah and our American History. A lot of our food, vocabulary, herbs, and games have Native American roots. The students also learned about diversity and race, and how one color of skin is no better than another.

Can you guess which of the following things were influenced by Native Americans?

A. The Constitution of the United States

B. Lacrosse and Hockey

C. Tomatoes and Avacados

D. Success in WWII

E. All of the above

If you guessed "E. All of the above", you are correct!

Thanks Mrs. Beyal for teaching us so much about our history!

Magic Beads for Good Choices

The first graders kicked off the first week of school by earning "Magic Beads" for making good choices, following rules, being kind, etc. Each bead they earned was threaded onto a pipe cleaner that was taped to their desk. On Friday we turned those pipe cleaners with beads into bracelets and talked about what it was that we thought made them so magical! Some of their ideas were: they glow in the dark, they change color with hot/cold water, and they can do things you tell them to do! We tried all of their suggestions, but nothing worked....until we walked outside! Their reactions were priceless when those beads instantly turned colors in the sun! Making good choices and being kind always pays off!

Congratulations to Mrs. Finch, who received the district's PEAK award last night at the school board meeting! This award is given to those who have made a significant difference in their school by showing kindness and a positive attitude. She was nominated by Mrs. Sumsion and Mrs. Peck. Here's what they had to say about Mrs. Finch:

“Katelyn is amazing with her students and their parents/guardians. She is very patient and helps everyone feel at peace with the services that are being offered. She has exceptional lessons that help students improve a lot. She helped one student raise his SAGE writing score by 139 points!! Katelyn works diligently with teachers on student IEPs. She works with the Dance Festival and other events for our Events Action Team. She is always positive and willing to go the extra mile to make it above and beyond awesome.”

“I am impressed with Katelyn. She has a heavy load as a resource teacher. Katelyn consistently communicates with me on how we can both meet my five self-contained students’ needs and be a team to help them academically and socially. She is happy to accommodate or try different and new approaches so our students succeed. Katelyn has been wonderful to work with and is a huge asset to our special education program at our school. She is kind and friendly to everyone. She has welcomed new students to her class with a loving attitude and is always positive.”

Wildly Important Goals

(more pictures available)

Yesterday's WIG assembly featured several teachers strutting down the red carpet wearing hilarious wigs. But this assembly was really about introducing this year's wildly important goals for the whole school. The first WIG is for the entire school to collectively move up 1,800 reading levels. The second WIG is for all students to be in their classroom by 9:00 90% of the time. This will take extra help from parents to make sure that kids get out the door on time. The rewards for reaching the reading WIG is that the kids will have a water party at the end of the year. If a class also reaches their attendance WIG, then the teachers have to get wet too!

We can't wait to see the kids' progress!

Think BIG

Fri, 08/25/2017 - 3:33pm

(more pictures available)

What does it mean to be "BIG" at Cherry Creek? That's the question Mr. Duncan asked when he came to visit every classroom this week. He read the book "Think BIG" to every class and talked about what this means for the kids.

Being BIG means being your best self, being responsible, being helpful and kind. You don't get an award for being BIG, but you get a good feeling inside. When Mr. Duncan asked the students what it means to be BIG at Cherry Creek, some said:

"Helping friends at recess."

"Eating healthy things."

"Being nice."

"Helping someone little reach something up high."

"Listening to your teacher."

Every new day is a gift. It's an opportunity to be your best self--to be BIG!
