We Lead: Student Jobs

You'd think the students had put the teachers out of a job! They help fill so many responsibilities both in their classrooms and around the school. Every student has the chance to contribute to how Cherry Creek operates day in and day out, and they do such great work! Some jobs include morning announcements, setting up for assemblies, leading lines quietly down the hall, time keepers, cleaners, delivering office notes, conducting morning lead time, keeping computers charged, and passing out papers. The jobs are endless! Even helping with small tasks helps these kids feel empowered, important, and that they have a chance to lead their peers.

This week is White Ribbon Week to teach students about internet and media safety. On Monday, students participated in a "Net Smartz" assembly, where they learned strategies for how to stay safe on the internet and manage how much time they spend with technology. They watched a video from Kid President that reminded them how ordinary people can do extraordinary things by being a smart digital citizen.

Students will participate in activities every day this week to focus on different points of internet and media safety.

Students helped with some basic teacher responsibilities and worked with the students during instruction time. They even got to enjoy their lunch break with the teachers in the faculty room. Cherry Creek is so lucky to have amazing teachers who are so willing to mentor and lead students!

We Learn: 6th Grade Engineering Fair

The first ever 6th grade Engineering Fair was held today, and students were interviewed and judged by volunteer engineers! In years past, 6th graders would participate in the Science Fair to learn about the scientific method. Since a change in the core curriculum this year, students now learn science with a focus on engineering and problem solving. The requirements were simple: think of a problem you face in daily living, and build a product that will help with that problem. They documented their materials, processes, and trials to find out if their product was effective. What they came up with was impressive to see!

Last week was January's victory assembly. We had our traditional victory lap to cheer on the students of the month and top croc award recipients. During the assembly, students got to watch another round of "Cherry Creek's Got Talent", get an update on how our school-wide WIGs are progressing, and find out what February's "catch of the creek" will be.

Students have made excellent progress on their reading WIG! The "water level" on the WIG tracker in the cafeteria is rising quickly.

To finish off the assembly, the first graders shared a video they made to introduce and explain Habit #5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Check out the video on our facebook page!

Mrs. Peck's 5th grade class got to use food to learn about Earth's tectonic plates and how they move to create mountains and valleys. Who knew graham crackers sliding on caramel could be so much fun? Volcano eruptions would be more like an ice cream party if the mantel was caramel like in a Milky Way!

This week Ms. Baldwin's 2nd grade class learned about the Civil Rights Movement, the Montgomery bus boycott and the injustices of segregation.

Students had a chance to write about their dreams for the world. They want to show others love. They want to see people treat each other with kindness. They want world peace...check out the pictures to see some examples of what they wrote.  We are grateful for examples of good and brave leaders to help us learn to be leaders too!

Fifth grade began a Kindness Challenge in December, and the challenge continues this month. As students decorated the hallway in the swamp, each student had their own paper stocking hanging on the wall. Before Christmas break students were able to write small kind notes and stuff them in each other’s stockings. They are trying to find some small or different ways to spread kindness to others. What a great way to inspire each other help everyone feel important!

Chemistry Teaches Synergy in 5th Grade

(more pictures available)

Discovery Gateway came to Cherry Creek Elementary to show our 5th graders the proper way to mix chemicals without blowing anything up or destroying themselves. When chemicals synergize, they create something different as they work together, just like what Habit #6 teaches us. Students were able to mix chemicals together and practice what they learned through personal trial and error.

They really enjoy the presentation that the lab scientist gave. They also enjoyed working with one another and synergizing to bring about a chemical reaction.
