Parent Education Night

All invited to the #savethekids free Parent Education Night sponsored by Nebo School District on November 5, 2018, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Springville High audirorium at 1205 East 900 South in Springville, Utah.

Collin Kartchner and Dr. Katey McPherson will lead a discussion on:

  • Balancing screen time and device use,
  • Protecting and cultivating our children's self worth,
  • Devising a sensible family use of device plan.

Sports Hero Day

Sixth graders from Canyon Elementary visited BYU campus on Thursday, October 4, for Sports Hero Day. BYU athletes talked with the students about having positive role models, never giving up, and setting goals. The sixth graders participated in activities led by BYU athletes. Before attending, sixth graders wrote essays on what being a hero means. Ryker Woods won the essay contest for Canyon! It was a day well spent.

Mummification

Sixth graders at Canyon Elementary learned about mummification in Emmy Bateman's class while studying ancient Egypt. After reading about and discussing mummification, Mrs. Bateman demonstrated the process using a fish. Students were facinated about this practice from ancient Greece.

Chickens in 6th Grade

Mrs. Perkins' sixth grade class earned a 30 minute activity by receiving the highest score possible, which is a 25. They received this perfect score 15 times from the Art, Music, Library and PE specialist since school started. They decided to have a "C" and "E" party. Two students, Braxton and Dylan entertained their classmates by bringing in their chickens. Well done!

Breakout

Students in Mrs. Murphy's 5th grade class participated in a Star Wars themed breakout. Students worked together in 5 small groups to find clues that would unlock the 5 different locks on their lock boxes.  Students learned the skill of working together and communicating as a team to solve the clues which would given them the information they needed to unlock their locks. As students solved each of the puzzles they found all the necessary clues to breakout!

Canyon School Carnival

Canyon Elementary's PTA has, once again, pulled off an amazing carnival. Students and parents filled the halls and outside fields. Yummy food, fun games, a climbing wall, bounce houses and auctions made for a festive evening. We are grateful for all those who supported the carnival and for our awesome PTA and volunteers who made it a success!

Cub Tracks Contest

This fall, students were given the opportunity to submit a design for our new Cub Tracks. At Canyon Elementary, staff can give Cub Tracks to recognize students for excellent behavior and being Cougar Cub Strong. These Cub Tracks are then entered into a weekly drawing for prizes. This year a contest was held to come up with a new design. Lydia Dauphinee and Launa Nielsen are amazing artists and won! The new designs have been printed and are currently being used to reward students.

Patriot Day Writing

Moon Phases

Thanks to the out-pouring of Oreos donated by parents, the entire 6th grade enjoyed their assessment of the moon phases. In fact, they did not even know they were being assessed. It was a fun activity and the donations were definitely appreciated. When we each do a little, a lot an be accomplished.

Walk More in Four Challenge

Canyon is participating in the Walk More in Four challenge starting September 10.

Participating K-8 students will be entered to win bikes, scooters, helmets and more. 

Participating is easy:  1. Students must walk or bike three times per week for four weeks to qualify.  2.  Children who live further away can compete by walking or riding within their neighborhood.  3.  Track involvement online or on the provided progress report.

Physical vs Chemical Change

Students in Mr. Zach Evans' class performed skits on physical vs chemical change. These fifth grade students were divided into groups and wrote skits. They have been exploring the difference between physical and chemical change. As students worked together, they wrote skits to solidify their understanding. The class enjoyed watching each other perform.
