Brockbank Encourages Students to Keep Reading This Summer

    Mon, 06/04/2018 - 12:19pm

We want to keep your child reading! Summer reading loss is real! Research has proven that the impact of summer reading loss can be significant.

The  more time a child spends reading, the better reader they become. So the best thing you can do for your children is to read to them, reading with them,  and providing them opportunities for more reading.

So to help motivate your child to read this summer we want them to join in our "POP" After Summer Reading Party!  Students who read at least 4 times a week and a minimum of 80 minutes a week will be invited to participate in out POP into Reading Party at the beginning of the new school year. Enjoy all things that POP! Popcorn, Popsicle, bubbles that pop, and balloon games. Fill out the calendar that was sent home and bring it back to your new teacher next year!

    Hello, Brockbank Families!

I just want to express my appreciation for you and your child!  Brockbank is an awesome school because of the wonderful students and families!  Our teachers are so dedicated and our staff is wonderful!  Thanks for all you have done to support our school this year!  It takes a team effort to help each child become his/her BEST!   I wish you the very best this summer and hope you enjoy a nice summer break with your child!

Our Summer Office Hours will be:  Mondays-Thursdays-8:00-1:00.

As we stated earlier, our school will be undergoing a lot of changes this summer.  Our school MAY tentatively be without power from June 11-June 22.  Because of this, I am not sure that our office will be open.  I will keep you updated on the progress of the work that is being done.  Please know that if you need anything during that time, you will still be able to contact me through email.

Need a way to fight the summer boredom? Reflections projects would be a great way to get your kids busy and being creative! The Reflections theme for 2018-2019 is "Heroes Around Me" and the due date for entries will be October 1st, 2018. Your child can create an original piece of work in these ways: drawing, painting, photography, 3-D Art, writing a story or original composition, or creating a piece of music or dance. We can't wait to see what the wonderful kids at Brockbank create!!
If you have any questions you can visit www.utahpta.org/reflections or contact Cindy Shepherd at eggmomma@gmail.com or Sara Hult at hultsara@yahoo.com. Have a great creative summer

Summer Reading:  We sent home information on our summer reading challenge!  Your child should have a gold and yellow sheet that explains the program, as well as a calendar to keep track of reading.  Those who meet the challenge will be invited to a special "POP into READING Party!"

Library:  To help with reading throughout the summer, we are going to have a short period of time when students will have access to the school library.  It will be open from July 10th-August 7th, from 9:00-11:00.  STUDENTS WILL NEED TO COME THROUGH THE NORTH SIDE OF THE SCHOOL THROUGH THE 6TH GRADE ENTRANCE.

Registration:  Online Registration will begin July 25.  (It was posted June 25 in the last Bulletin.  Sorry for the error!)  We will be emailing you more information about this!  In-person registration will be August 1st.

Fifth Grade Students Attend Freedom Walk

    Fri, 05/25/2018 - 7:47am

    (more pictures available)

Recently fifth grade students had the opportunity to attend and participate in the Freedom Walk held at the Spanish Fork Sports Park. It was hosted by Spanish Fork's American Legion. Veterans from each of the branches were represented and told stories about their experiences to the students. Fifth grade student, Wade Jones, said he liked hearing about the different planes that the Air Force used best. This event was a great experience for the students to get a better understanding and appreciation for the Flag and the sacrifices made by everyone who has served in the military.

Retirement Open House Held Honoring Kristi Jensen and Alexandra Dedrickson

    Tue, 05/22/2018 - 11:50pm

    (more pictures available)

Friday, May 4, an open house was held at Brockbank Elementary honoring two amazing teachers, Mrs. Alexandra Dedrickson and Ms. Kristi Jensen. These two ladies have touched the lives of many children throughout the years and will be greatly missed. We wish them both the best!

Kristi Jensen - Special Education Teacher,  Resource, Behavior Unit & Self Contained. Kristi has taught at Grant, Larsen & Brockbank. She has 30 years of service in Nebo, 1 year in another District .

“My teaching career has come full circle. I did my student teaching at Brockbank Elementary at the beginning of my career as a young woman full of hopes and dreams of impacting special education children. I am ending my career at Brockbank having fulfilled my hopes and dreams and have noticed the impact on my students lives. I have been blessed to work with countless co-workers who have encouraged me and inspired me. I have had amazing Principals who have supported and advised me. I have been highly trained by the Special Education Department. I have written and attended thousands of IEP’s. I end my career full of love for educators, para educators, co-workers, bosses/Principals and most of all the children – whom have kept me both sane and insane for the past 31 years.”

Alexandra Dedrickson- Teacher – Brockbank Elementary 33 years of service in Nebo

“Thirty three years ago I was hired by Nebo School District to teach 1st grade. Those 33 years have flown by and I realized that during those years I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades along with 9 years in Reading Recovery. I have been privileged to work with the best principals, teachers, students and parents at Brookside and Brockbank Elementary schools. As a teacher who thoroughly enjoyed teaching reading, I find myself closing this chapter in my life and beginning a new series.”

    Hello, Brockbank Families!

WOW!  It is hard to believe that we are down to the final week of school.  I want to tell you how much I have enjoyed this year!   It has been a great year and I have loved getting to know each student better and better!  I have loved having them come into my office with “blue tickets” (for good behavior).  I have loved watching them play outside at recess, and I have loved watching them interact with their peers and with their teachers.  We have such a tremendous staff and I love and admire each person that works so hard each day to make a difference for our students!  I appreciate the support and help you all give to our school!  We have amazing families and the good values that you teach your child reflects in the good things that happen at school each day!  Thanks so much for all you do!

Now, we have a few changes that I need to explain!  I am sad to tell you that we got a call from Spanish Fork City and the pool will NOT be ready for our annual Swimming Activity on the last day of school!  I was not able to tell the students, so they are unaware of this change.  Our teachers are so disappointed too, but they were quick to come up with some fun activities for our students for the last day of school.    We will still plan on having  lunch so please plan on having your child keep his/her original order of either home or school lunch for that day.   We will be ending school at 11:30 for bus students and noon for our walkers.  There will be NO water-type activities, so please do not have your child come in swimwear.

As we stated earlier, our school will be undergoing a lot of changes this summer.  That is why we will not be having summer school.  Our school MAY tentatively be without power from June 11-June 22.  Because of this, I am not sure that our office will be open.  I will keep you updated on the progress of the work that is being done.  Please know that if you need anything during that time, you will still be able to contact me through email.

Summer Reading:  We will be having our summer reading challenge!  Please watch for more information coming home with your child.

REGISTRATION:  Please remember that ALL STUDENTS, including kindergarten students, will need to register for school before the school year begins!  Online registration will open July 25th, and in-person registration will be August 1st.  I will be sending more information as it gets closer to those dates.

Box Tops: We are collecting Box Tops one more time before the school year ends!  Please watch for a Box Top Sheet for your child to glue Box Tops to and return it by May 18th.  The class with the most Box Tops will get a pizza party!!!

Freedom Walk:  On Wednesday, our 5th grade students have a special opportunity to go to Volunteer Park and meet with some very special Veterans.  This day is called the Freedom Walk.  Our 5th  grade students have all written about a Veteran that they have a connection with, and those written reports will be displayed as well.  This will be a fun and special day for our 5th grade students.

Track Meets:  Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be having our Track Meets for grades 3-6.  All the track meets will be at the Spanish Fork High School football field.  Here are the dates for those meets:
    April 24-3rd Grade
    May 1-4th Grade

SAGE Testing:  We are testing each day and the students are really working hard.  Your child may not be testing every day, however, it is imperative that he/she is at school, whether his/her class is reviewing and/or testing.  If your child is going to be absent during this testing period, please notify your child’s teacher so he/she can make arrangements for alternate days of testing.  First and Second grades will be testing April 23-May 11th, and the Kindergarten Assessment will be May 21-25.

Math Lab:  Just a reminder that we have our Math Lab opened in the mornings before school, at 8:30.  Any student is welcome to come and practice math facts, use the online REFLEX program, or get help with math assignments!

PTA:  Parents, we need your help!  We need more parents to get involved with PTA!  This is such a great organization and the PTA does so much for our students, but we need all the help we can get!  We know it takes a village to raise a child, and PTA makes it possible to help make this happen!  PTA volunteers are there to support students make good progress with their academics, with activities, with needed items for our school, and with support for families.  Please come be a part of our PTA!  Contact Brenda Dudley for more information with how you can help!

Teacher Requests:  Our teachers work very hard to collaborate so that all students get the same lesson, activities, and experiences in that particular grade level.  Teachers analyze student work and assessments together so they can all play an important part in each student’s academic success.  Hopefully, you will understand that your child’s education will be the same in any teacher’s classroom on that grade level.   However, there are times when certain circumstances arise where parents feel the need to request a certain teacher/classroom for their child. Because of THOSE types of situations, we will be allowing teacher requests to be made from May 7th - May 18th.  Parents are able to fill out a form that is available in the office.  It is very important that you read the whole form.  Parents may choose between a teacher choice (you may give two teachers’ names that are EQUAL in choice) OR a request for your child to not be with another child in the same class.  No requests may be made before or after this time period given. After requests are made, there will be no changes to the requests made.  I also WILL NOT accept any requests made via email.   All requests must be made in the office.

We also want to let you know that unfortunately we will not be able to have summer school this summer!  Our school is undergoing a lot of updating and changing and we will be without power for a short period of time.  There will also be many workers here and with all the construction, we will not be able to have students here.  We are so sorry for the inconvenience.  However, Angie Killian, the principal at Riverview Elementary School, has offered to have our students go to their summer school if you are interested.  For more information, please call Riverview Elementary.

Book Fair-BOGO:  We are excited to announce that we are having another Book Fair!  This Book Fair is especially awesome because it is Buy One Get One Free! The Book Fair will be next week, Monday, May 7-11, in room 13.

Track Meets:  Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be having our Track Meets for grades 3-6.  All the track meets will be at the Spanish Fork High School football field.  Here are the dates for those meets:
    April 24-3rd Grade
    May 1-4th Grade
    May 8-6th Grade
    May 15-5th Grade
Please make sure your child has water, comfortable clothing, good running shoes and a jacket.

Box Tops: We are collecting Box Tops one more time before the school year ends!  Please watch for a Box Top Sheet for your child to glue Box Tops to and return it by May 18th.  The class with the most Box Tops will get a pizza party!!!
