Environmental Science class beautifies the inner court

Mr. Darwin Deming’s Environmental Science class has started a long, overdue project of cleaning, upgrading, and beautifying the inner court.  The students started with the ponds.  Science students drained them and are shoveling out 20-30 years’ worth of 1-2 feet of decomposing debris.

Their upgrade plan includes cutting into the walls and connecting the ponds making one large pond.  Once the area is cleaned out, they will add some aquatic plants and some fish (and return the turtle to its new home).  They’ve raked up leaf litter and cut back some of the trees in an effort to beautify the area.  They also pulled out a lot of the cattails and are looking to introduce other marsh plants into the courtyard.

“The goal is to create a relatively balanced and self-sustainable ecosystem, and increase aesthetic appeal.  We are also looking into fixing up the greenhouse that is in there and grow some tropical plants, as well as expanding the desert biome area,” said Mr. Darwin Deming, Environmental Science instructor.

Springville High alumni Cliff Holm helped with his concrete saw.  Holm works for Clyde Co.

During the week of October 25 - 28 the 90th National FFA convention was held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Students from Springville FFA had the opportunity to attend this convention and expo. While in attendance students expanded their knowledge by attending workshops and tours of local businesses. These tours included Jeptha Creed Distillery, Undulata Farm, KyBlueGrass Genetics, Schaffer Hogs and Abbott’s Candy Factory.

On Friday morning Springville FFA members participated in a “Day of Service” in which they filled boxes for a senior food program. Each box weighed 40 pounds and contained items such as canned fruit, vegetables and meat as well as cereal and shelf stable milk. During a two hour shift, students were able to package 588 boxes.

Kameron Talbot, Brooke Larsen, Cailynn Hackworth and Sadie Rasmussen also had the opportunity to represent the State of Utah for the Agricultural Communications Career Development Event. The National FFA Agricultural Communications CDE is a competitive event that tests students’ skills in all areas of the agricultural communication field and evaluates how well they can apply classroom knowledge to real life situations. Participants attend a simulated news conference and use the information gathered to complete individual practicums in writing, electronic media and design. Our team was awarded a silver ranking.

Welcome New AP and Honors Chemistry Teacher Carter Jennings

Thu, 11/02/2017 - 2:11pm

Carter Jennings is our new AP and Honors Chemistry Teacher; however, he’s a long-time Red Devil. He graduated from Springville High School, then later attended and graduated from the University of Utah. This is his first year teaching and he’s excited about it.

Jennings reflects on his teaching vision, “My vision of teaching is to show my students that a “challenging” subject like Chemistry can be fun and much easier than people think. I hope that my own excitement about Chemistry is reflected in my teaching and students can get excited about it as well.”

Jennings demonstrated that Chemistry can be fun by making a balloon explode with fire.

“The most rewarding experience I’ve had teaching is to see the “light bulb” come on. Chemistry can be hard to understand; but, when I can help break it down for a student and they get it, that is a very rewarding experience,” said Jennings.

Jennings has been married for two years; his wife’s name is Cassidy.  Some of his hobbies include watching MythBusters, skiing, playing games, and spending time with his family.

“Some people may find it interesting that I hold my pen/pencil the same way Taylor Swift does. (I held it that way first!),” said Jennings.
