Math department multiplies again, welcome Mrs. Claire Taylor

We’d like to welcome Mrs. Claire Taylor as one of our new math teachers teaching Math 1 and Math 3. This is her first year teaching; however, as a BYU student, she student taught at American Fork High where she taught US History, Asian Studies, and Chemistry.

“I think teenagers are fantastic. There's a lot going on for them, but they are working on skills and getting it," said Taylor.

Taylor said that one of her most rewarding teaching experiences is when a student struggles, finds success, and then smiles. It is priceless and very motivating.

“I have personally witnessed how awesome the faculty, staff, and students Springville High School can be, a couple of years ago I got a phone call from a mom whose child was struggling in math and wanted to know if I could help this student. I met with them at the Springville High counseling office, and we talked about some changes that could be made. Every one of them was eager to help, but that's not all.  As we went from class to class we saw students that came up and hugged this student, asked how things were going. "How have you been? I haven't seen you! What's up?" I walked away from Springville High School so impressed that day,” said Taylor.

She’s been married for 21 years to her husband Bryan, who is a really thoughtful, hard-working, and capable.

Together they have five children, four boys and one girl. Two of her children graduated from Springville High. Taylor attends SHS football games, track meets, wrestling matches, swim meets, intramural volleyball tournaments, and any choir or drama performances she can.

She likes to read and solve New York Times crossword puzzles. Listening to music is one of her pastimes as well as watching college football. She enjoys just about any food, especially made by one of her four younger sisters. She’s traveled to many different places and has witnessed other cultures. She collects art and Christmas ornaments from the places she travels to.

Claire graduated from Sugar Land High School in a town outside of Houston.

“It was a great place to grow up and I have many friends still in that area,” said Taylor.

The most unusual job she had was working at a nightclub in Houston. She knew the owner and helped with accounting. The best perk was the concerts in which she met performers and musicians.

“I’ve dreamed of being a backup singer my whole life, but for now I am really happy to teach math at Springville High School!” said Taylor.

Owens reflected on the rewards of being a counselor, “I think seeing students grow and change is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a counselor; watching a student overcome and succeed,” said Owens.

Owens’ husband is Chris and they have four boys; one of them attends SHS and her youngest just started Kindergarten. She is a huge University of Utah fan and she attends all of their football games. She likes boating, camping and reading.

The beginning of the school year is a time to welcome in new students and teachers. Springville is excited to welcome Ms. Madeline Vest into the English Department.

Vest worked at Polaris High School in Alpine School District last year. However, teaching English isn’t her most unusual job--Vest worked as a mixologist at Sodalicious.

“My vision for my classroom at Springville High is that it is a place where all my students feel comfortable, supported, and capable of success,” said Vest.

Vest has a lot of passions and hobbies besides teaching English. She also enjoys playing the piano, hiking, eating yummy food, reading, and spending time with her family.

Springville High School’s New Rock'n Guitar Teacher

Springville High has begun and we have welcomed a lot of students and new teachers, we are excited to welcome Mr. Jake Coleman to the Music Department. This is the beginning of Coleman’s third year of public school teaching and his 16th year of music teaching. Coleman taught at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah, and at Rockwell Charter High school.  Coleman teaches Guitar.

Teaching Guitar isn’t the most unusual job Coleman has ever had.  Coleman’s worked at a telemarketing company, he disliked working at a desk and loathes pushing someone to buy a product he isn’t sure he would even buy.

He has been married nearly ten years to his wife Erica. They have two beautiful sons and a daughter due soon.  One of Coleman’s hobbies is the weather--he likes bad weather, it’s good weather to him. He also enjoys fishing, hunting, and wilderness survival.

One of Coleman’s teaching philosophies is, “Average teachers tell, good teachers show, and excellent teachers inspire.”

“Watching students realize they love something they just understood, or learned to do. This brings them confidence, and motivates them to move forward,” said Coleman.

He wishes every student would give their absolute best effort in high school and take the challenging classes that everyone says are difficult.  Coleman says that they will help you develop in so many ways.

Camille Callister is one of our new English teachers here at Springville High.  This is her first year teaching; however, last year she was an intern at Spanish Fork High.  Callister teaches sophomores and juniors, English 10 and 11.

“My vision is to create a classroom where my students feel safe, in an atmosphere that allows them to learn at the highest levels possible,” said Callister.

Callister is truly a Red Devil, “I graduated from Springville High School in 1981, and it feels good to be "home" again!”

Her most rewarding teaching experiences is when she helps to create good relationships with her students.

On a personal note, she has five children, ages 18 - 31, three grandchildren, and a little Shih Tzu named Rosie.  She enjoys reading, writing, gardening, art, and music.

The most unusual job she had was delivering newspapers the summer before her internship.  She started delivering at 2 a.m. and her route was in the farmlands around Salem.  It was dark and the houses were sometimes few and far between, so it was a little eerie at times.
