Dear Students, Parents, Staff, and Friends:

FFA WEEK

Spanish Fork FFA is celebrating along with chapters around the country, the amazing accomplishments of members, teachers, and the industry of agriculture. Our FFA members are sponsoring dress up days throughout the week. See the calendar below or our Facebook page for more details.

GIRLS WHO CODE CLUB

The Girls Who Code Club program is a free program for girls in grades 6-12 that provides engaging project-based activities.

Club girls join a safe and supportive environment of peers & role models and learn to see themselves as computer scientists. Beyond the Club, girls can tap into an alumni network of tens of thousands of girls across the country that is using computer science to solve problems they care about.

Club girls learn the concepts of loops, variables, conditionals, and functions that form the basis for all programming languages — whether they want to build a website, an app, or a robot. Club girls work in teams to design and build a Computer Science “CS” Impact Project that solves real world problems they care about through code.

If you are interested in learning more or joining this club, send an email to heather.mendonsa@nebo.edu. Club girls will meet during Pack Time one or two days each week.

PTA BOOK FAIR SUCCESSES

FROM OUR PTA: The PTA loves our teachers and staff!  During February’s book fair we gave out "gift cards" for each.  Thank you SFJHS for all you do for our kids!

The PTA loves our kids, too!  Because we had such amazing support at our fall book fair, we decided to give out "gift certificates" to some students!  We had a drawing and one kid from each English class received a $5 gift certificate good for a book!  As a result, 30 certificates were redeemed.  The PTA is thrilled to have more books in the hands of our students!

Also, because of the success of our FALL BOOK FAIR,  we were able to buy additional books for the English teachers’ classroom libraries. And, just over $1,000 was donated at this book fair!

With our extra scholastic dollars we earn from each book fair we hope to be able to do some fun things like this again at our next fair in the fall.

Thank you parents for the support you give the PTA and our school by purchasing books at our book fairs!

Eighth Grade History Students Visit State Capitol

Tue, 02/20/2018 - 10:14am
Attributions: by Shea Harmer

The 8th grade US History classes had the opportunity to visit the Utah state capitol building on Friday and got to see government working full throttle.

Students watched a session of Congress in which the families of Utah’s fallen soldiers were honored and  took a peek at the building’s new earthquake absorption mechanisms.  They spoke with Representative Mike McKell and got a special tour of the Supreme Court from him and our own Mayor Leifson.  They even got to have a question and answer period with Senator Diedre Henderson!

The kids learned a lot and were able to experience government! This field trip is always a favorite.

A Pig with Heart

Mon, 02/19/2018 - 11:51am

On February 8, 2018, the students in Mrs. Mendonsa’s class had a great and wonderful time watching Mrs. Mendonsa share with them parts of a pig. She brought a pig heart, lungs, esophagus, and larynx into class with her.

With a shop vacuum, she was able to blow the pig lungs up and show how the lungs of a pig and human work.

With the pig heart, she showed us how many chambers it had and where most of the organs attached to the heart in order for everything to work out. The class had a fun time and was able to learn about the inside of a pig.

The students had lively conversations and ended the activity with a sweet sugar cookie treat. Thanks to Mrs. Wilson for putting together this awesome activity!

Nebo School District is always trying to improve communication and responsiveness to our stakeholders. To that end, we invite students, parents and teachers to give feedback on teachers and administrators in Nebo District schools.  A link to the Nebo Stakeholder Survey 2017-2018 will be found on the Nebo home page at www.nebo.edu beginning Wednesday, February 7 and remaining open until Wednesday, February 21, 2018, where Nebo District stakeholders will be able to share their thoughts and experiences. (Parents and employees will be emailed a link to help them gain access, while students will be shown the link in their computer labs.)

The purpose of the Nebo Stakeholder Survey is to help us improve instruction and to keep our finger on the pulse of our patrons. For feedback to be most useful, we suggest being polite even when sharing intensely positive or negative feelings, sharing specific experiences that illustrate your ratings, and using appropriate language in all circumstances.

Lady Lobos Conquer Springville’s Lady Knights

Tue, 02/06/2018 - 3:42pm
Attributions: by Shae Harmer with Rillene Nielsen
(more pictures available)

The semi-finals game was a hard fought battle for the Lady Lobos who took on the Springville Lady Knights. The Lobos offense got off to a slow start; they struggled to get into a rhythm the entire first half. Springville, however, came to play. They were very aggressive and scrappy. The Lady Lobos ended up going into half time down by 2 points.
The second half proved that SF had made the adjustments necessary to pull themselves ahead. A few collisions and injuries did occur. Callie Johnson was knocked into a Springville player and got wacked in the eye. She ended up needing stitches after the game.
The Lady Lobos worked tirelessly and fought a hard battle all the way to end, winning by just 2 points!
But that was enough to get them into the championship game against Mapleton. The game is today at Springville HS. Come support your SFJH Lobos as they look for the back to back championship victories.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IS AT 5PM ON FEB. 6TH WITH THE BOYS' GAME IMMEDIATELY AFTER, BOTH AT SPRINGVILLE HIGH SCHOOL.

Nebo EdTech Spotlights Teacher Heather Mendonsa

Tue, 02/06/2018 - 7:39am

(more pictures available)

Heather Mendonsa, a science teacher at Spanish Fork Jr. High, was recently spotlighted in the Nebo EdTech Newsletter.  Ms. Mendonsa was featured for the innovative ways she’s using the technology available in Nebo District to help students learn.

Ms. Mendonsa explained, “I have started using Mastery Paths in Canvas and I am excited about where this program can take my class. It has changed my planning and differentiation in great ways.”

“First, I gave a pretest to my classes and divided it into specific topics,” continued Ms. Mendonsa.  “Based on their results, Canvas automatically assigned remedial lessons to those who needed it, focused on vocabulary and repetition for my ELL students, and gave more in-depth opportunities to those who are already at mastery. At this point, I am using Mastery Paths during class about twice a week. I have found that the students are happier because they are getting the information they need at their own pace.”

Innovation and best practices set great teachers apart from the rest.  SFJH is fortunate to have Ms. Mendonsa on the faculty team, helping students succeed.  “I'm excited to see where this is going in the next few years,” she said.  We are too.

Lobo Update 02/05/2018

Mon, 02/05/2018 - 9:43pm
Attributions:

Parents, Students, and Friends –

January was a busy month for the students at SFJHS! We finished out our wrestling season, continued our basketball season, sent attendees to Nebo’s junior high youth board meeting. We celebrated students of the month. The orchestra played in concert with American Idol stars, we remembered Martin Luther King, Jr., and began rehearsing the school musical. We found joy in our annual HOPE week activities, finished Term 2, and FFA attended the Wasatch Back judging. We went on educational field trips, performed in, and listened to the Nebo Youth Symphony. Most importantly, teachers taught amazing lessons giving students opportunities to learn and grow in all academic areas. We thank you all for trusting all of the teachers, technicians, lunch ladies, bus drivers, custodians, coaches, secretaries, administrators, and counselors to help your student succeed and thrive. February, here we come!

ALC JR. HIGH FIELD TRIP REGISTRATION

Have you ever wondered what the Advanced Learning Center is and what you can do there? Registration for the ALC field Trip goes from now until February 23rd. You will see the many classes you can take learn how the classes can give you college credit while still in high school! Our school will be attending the morning session. Sign up now in the counseling office because we have only 60 slots available.

SCIENCE FAIR

Our school science fair will be held Wednesday and Thursday, February 6th and 7th in the library.  Judging for the fair will be conducted from 1st to 4th periods on Wednesday.  Awards will be presented during 7th period (Wednesday).  The open house for viewing projects will be on Thursday during the school day.

STUDENT CELL PHONE USE

Unfortunately, it has become a more and more common occurrence that parents are calling their students during class. If you need to contact your student, please call the front office or text them. When students receive phone calls from parents during class, they think it is an emergency and they need to answer which causes a disruption for the entire class. So please remind your students about good phone etiquette. Thank you!

Nebo District electronics policy JDE states:

Student use of electronic devices must adhere to the following rules and guidelines: Electronic devices may be used during a class period or school activity when specifically approved by the teacher or a school administrator in conjunction with educationally appropriate objectives. A teacher or school administrator should only authorize the use of electronic devices during a class period or other school activities when it benefits and enhances the students’ education. Such matters may be addressed in a disclosure document provided by the teacher outlining class rules, procedures, and expectations.
