Sabrina Huyett and Sherry Plaisted Receive Grants from The Nebo Foundation

Mrs. Sabrina Huyett and Mrs. Sherry Plaisted recently received grants from the the Nebo Education Foundation. The Nebo Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District. Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students.

Brockbank Elementary – Sabrina Huyett
“Thank you so much for your generous grant to our class! We are beyond thrilled to have new science materials. These funds will enable us to hatch chickens, explore static and current electricity, and experience magnetism. Before receiving this grant, we only had one type of magnet. The Utah science core lists several types of magnets that students need to be familiar with, and now our students will have hands-on experience with all of them! This will make such a difference in our science exploration. Many thanks!” exclaimed Sabrina Huyett, fifth-grade teacher at Brockbank Elementary.

Brockbank Elementary – Sherry PlaistedSherry Plaisted, facilitator at Brockbank Elementary, said, “Nebo Foundation does such an excellent job of supporting our school with the reading materials we need. These books will give our lower readers, just right materials that look more advanced with age appropriate themes and ideas. Thank you so much for the many ways you help schools all over the district. I have worked in other states and I would have loved having a Nebo Foundation when I was teaching in other places. You do such an amazing job and make grants so easy to apply for. Thanks again!!!”

PTA:  Parents, we need your help!  We need more parents to get involved with PTA!  This is such a great organization and the PTA does so much for our students, but we need all the help we can get!  We know it takes a village to raise a child, and PTA makes it possible to help make this happen!  PTA volunteers are there to support students progress with their academics, with activities, with needed items for our school, and with support for families.  Please come be a part of our PTA!  Contact Brenda Dudley for more information with how you can help!

Sherry Plaisted Receives PEAK Award

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 12:07am
Attributions: Lana Hiskey

Brockbank's Sherry Plaisted was recognized and received the PEAK (Positive Energy and Kind) Award for January. She along with six other deserving Nebo employees were honored Wednesday night, January 10 at the School Board Meeting. Congratulations Sherry!

Sherry Plaisted, Facilitator, Brockbank Elementary
Nominated by: Emmalee Stewart, Jessica Larsen, Camille Pearson, Erin Spung, Larraine Nelson
“Sherry is an amazing mentor, who is always looking for ways to help those she is mentoring. She keeps herself accessible any time of the day for questions and to help others talk through problems. Sherry is encouraging and always finds the positive in the teachers she is mentoring. She would point out the things she loved that were going on in my classroom. She would help us to be successful by guiding us through problems to find solutions, rather than just giving us the answers. Sherry doesn’t do these things because it is her job, she does it because she is kind and truly cares for the people that she mentors and wants them to be successful. Because she has such an impact on the teachers at Brockbank, her impact on the students at the school is endless. She dedicates countless hours to improving the STAR program at the school, always looking for ways to help more students succeed. She devotes her personal time talking through lessons and goes out of her way to help teachers prepare things for the classroom. Sherry is more than an intern facilitator, she is a mentor devoted to her job and to the success of everyone at Brockbank. She fills in wherever she is needed, with a smile on her face. She is always willing to help anyone, and everyone, with whatever she can.

“Sherry always goes the extra mile for absolutely everyone she encounters. She is such a wonderful mentor. She is willing to help with anything asked and she always has a smile on her face. She helped me grow as an educator in more ways than I ever could have imagined. She is truly an incredible person.”

“Sherry has been an amazing mentor and friend. She is so patient and is willing to help in anyway that teachers need. She is always willing to come in and model lessons for teachers as well as take a guided reading group when you are overwhelmed. She is amazing!”

“I would have never survived my intern year without her! She makes her interns work extra hard; but because of that, I was more prepared for my future teaching years. She taught me everything I needed to know and went above and beyond the things she was required to do. Sick? She was there. Hungry? She was there. Classroom not set up? Management problems? Lacking anything? She was there. I've never had so much support from one person in the school setting ever, and I don't believe anyone can be as great as she is.”

Third-grade students in Mrs. Carolyn Creer's class, once a week, go into Mrs. Tara Farr's kindergarten class and help the students. Each kindergarten student gets a third-grade buddy to work with, whether it be reading to each other, practicing flash cards, or just helping the student with whatever they are working on. Whenever there is a holiday, or at least once a month, the students get to do a fun activity together. One fun activity is they got to make Christmas trees made out of ice cream cones, covered with frosting, and decorated with candy.

Brockbank Elementary first-graders celebrated the holiday season by having a Polar Express Day on Tuesday, December 19. They earned this day by meeting their classroom reading goals. Each first-grade class had to fill their Polar Express train car and in order to accomplish this, each student had to read at least six books. As a reward for meeting this goal, students got to wear pajamas to school; make Polar Express trains out of HoHo's, starlight mints, and chocolate bells; make engineer hats out of paper. That afternoon they got to watch the movie, "Polar Express".
