On Friday Westside honored our nation's veterans in an assembly. The student council spoke about each branch of the military and asked members of those branches present to stand and be appreciated. Mrs. Krabbe's husband, Staff Sargent Moxey of the National Guard, then spoke to the students about the importance of respecting those who serve. The assembly ended as the student body sang "God Bless the USA."

Students poured (red) hot water and (blue) cold water in two sides of a density box. When the partition between the two of them was removed, the denser cold water moved to the bottom, while the less-dense hot water moved to the top.

Annual Spiritual and Religious Youth Art Competition

December 2, 2017 - January 6, 2018

With the Holiday season swiftly approaching, we are excited to announce this year's Annual Spiritual & Religious Youth Art Competition. This exhibition, formerly known as the Annual Christmas Lamb Art Show exhibition, sponsored by Ingrid F. Nemelka and the Nemelka family, is open to K-10 students living in Utah Valley. This year, in efforts to make this an interfaith celebration, we are encouraging students to create artwork focused on symbols of the season.

This competition is open to K-10 students living within Utah Valley. Works for the show should be of a spiritual theme and reflect meaningful symbols of the holiday season. We encourage students to consider the following questions when thinking of subject matter:

  • How do you celebrate?
  • What symbols are meaningful to you during this time of year?
  • What are you favorite family traditions during the season?

Important Dates:

 November 1, 2017 - November 3, 2018   from 10 am to 4pm

Artwork may be dropped off at the Museum

November 17, 2017

List of accepted works will be posted at smofa.org

This week the sixth grade kids went on a field trip to STEM Fest, an annual event held to encourage kids to be interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The sixth graders walked around the exhibit halls at the South Towne Expo Center and explored booths where they were able to participate in STEM activities. They played with robots, learned about CPR, felt electrical current travel, demo-ed computer programs, and tried virtual reality. With STEM careers being so prevalent today and in the future, it was great for kids to see applications of what they learn in school!

ROAR Board Party

Wed, 10/04/2017 - 11:34am

This year we have a chart in our school where kids can write their names if they are caught doing something particularly great. When all 100 are filled, a group of them is chosen at random, and those kids are invited to an ice-cream party. We recently had our first party and want to congratulate all of the kids who were chosen!
