Reading Celebration

Fri, 05/18/2018 - 3:25pm

(more pictures available)

Spanish Oaks students totally earned today’s school-wide reading celebration by meeting (... and exceeding with 1,896,810 TOTAL minutes!) their reading goal of 1,750,000 minutes read!!!   Each grade-level met outside at their assigned time for instructions from Mrs. Brown ...  We had three (3) 15 minute rotations during each 45 minute time:

  • pizza
  • water/bucket relay w/ Creamie
  • fire truck (ginormous sprinklers)

Our students had a blast!  “This is the best day of my life!”  “Can we do this again next year!!??”  “That was SO awesome!”  “I don’t know who made the pizza, but tell them it was delicious!”  ... just some of the feedback we received.

A huge “thank you” to our wonderful organizer, Aubrey Smith, as well as our parent volunteers:  Sarah O’Gwin, Nicki Newman, Laura Theodosis, Kelly Burtenshaw, and Kimberley Marsden!  A special expression of appreciation and “shout out” to Spanish Fork Fire Department volunteers, Matt Taylor and Kendall Young ... you made this day EPIC for our students!

Another huge thank you to, Mrs. Brown, for providing all the pizza and creamies!  They were super yummy!  This was a first ... and we were SO excited to celebrate our awesome student reading!!

Freedom Walk

The Spanish Fork American Legion Post 68 hosted the second annual Freedom Walk at the Spanish Fork Sports Park on May 8 and 9. Members from each of the branches of the military were represented and told stories to nearly 1,250 fifth-graders from 13 schools during the two-day event.

Prior to the walk, each student either interviewed or researched a veteran and wrote a summary of what they learned. One-page summaries and photos of these veterans, many of which are family members, were attached to banners, creating a Wall of Honor which lined the walking route.

During the event, students completed a walk around the park, symbolic of walking in the shoes of the veteran they interviewed or researched. Along the walk were seven stations where Legion members would tell stories and even show items from their service. One student designed a shirt that was worn by all students which read, “We didn’t know them all, but we owe them all.”

Last year’s Freedom Walk was the first, and was conceived by Legion member Richard Johnson as a way to help the youth have a better understanding and appreciation for military veterans. According to Legion members, the walk is unlike any other event organized by the Legion.

“This event allows us to help the kids have a better understanding of and appreciation for the Flag and the sacrifices made by everyone who has served in the military,” said Legion Member Wayne Anderson.

These students really get it done when it comes to exceptional behavior!  We want to recognize them for having a positive impact on our school.  Our last group of Excellent Explorers for this year are Cooper Johnson, Ezra Christensen, Brynlee Dyches, Heather Laing and Gracie Beck.  They were nominated by fellow peers or teachers for the following reasons: Heather Laing-Heather is one of the most optimistic students I have ever seen.  She works hard and never complains.  When she struggles with a concept she has a growth mindset and asks for help.  She is always willing to try and try again.  She befriends students that are lonely and is friends with everyone.  Brynlee Dyches-Brynlee Dyches is so sweet and nice to everyone.  She always goes up to people and gives them a hug and makes them so happy.  She is also a hard worker and she never gives up.  She inspires lots of people.  Brynlee is nice, kind, sweet, giving, responsible, caring, honest and very polite.  She is such an amazing and talented girl.  Ezra Christensen-Ezra is an exceptional student.  He is always doing his best.  He is always listening to instructions and following directions the first time they are given.  He is a great friend to everyone in class.  He is kind, responsible and always happy.  Cooper Johnson-He works very hard and tries to be a good friend to everyone.  He is respectful and always has a good attitude.  His class has had a long term sub recently, and he helps out and loves her.  He is so kind and plays with everyone.  He follows rules and is always on his best behavior.  Gracie Beck-Gracie is new to Spanish Oaks so she has made sure other new students feel welcome.  I had a mom tell me how much she appreciated Gracie helping her daughter feel welcome when she moved here.  She’s always happy and loves to learn.  Make sure to tell these student congratulations when you see them!!

We had some excited students yesterday as they were presented with a pair of rodeo tickets for this summer for being awesome readers during the past month.  Our winners were Lilly Mendez, Kallen Brough, Halle Oakey, Kayson Dimmick, Jessica Bishop, Paige Johnson and Kambree Lewis.  These students read a total of 2,791 minutes during April.  That is the same as 63 hours or 2.5 days.  Pretty impressive!  Our school wide reading minutes for April totaled 213,286 minutes!  That is even more impressive!  Kallen Brough and Jessica Bishop were then chosen out of those 7 to win cowboy boots, jeans and a cowboy hat.

Our school reading goal was met and exceeded this year with a total of 1,800,000+ minutes.  That is amazing, and we get to celebrate this accomplishment on Monday with a school wide reading celebration!  We are all excited for that!
