PTA Reflections 2018 HEROES AROUND ME

Mon, 09/24/2018 - 4:19pm

"For 50 years, National PTA’s Reflections program has helped students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.  Each year, hundreds of thousands of students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create and submit original works of art in one or all of the available arts categories."

This morning we kicked off Reflections 2018!  Students watched an introduction video to learn about Reflections (link below) and were given an Entry Form.

The theme this year is "Heroes Around Me".   All entries are DUE October 22, 2018 (the Monday after Fall Break).  Entries can be turned in early if you would like to turn them in before the break.  All participants will receive a participation prize!

Students can pick up submission guidelines and an entry form today from the bulletin board outside the office and return by MONDAY, OCTOBER 22nd.

Where You Look, Is Where You Go ... Aim High!  Just like when you are riding a bike … where you look, that’s where you’ll go.  If you are riding down the road and you focus on the tree, you will run into the tree!  Instead focus on the place you want the bike to go to have a nice bike ride.  Where you look, that’s where you go; where you focus your attention is where you will end up!  Great job, students ... setting goals and going after them!  At Spanish Oaks we choose every day to:  Be Kind, Show Respect, Work Hard ... and Aim HIGH!

Dancing to Learn at Spanish Oaks Elementary

(more pictures available)

Spanish Oaks Elementary had a Nebo District Dance Specialist visit last week as part of the the Nebo GAINS (Growing Arts INebo Schools) program, sponsored by the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program.  Specialist, Melanie Fillmore, visited with classroom teachers and students offering ideas for the use of dance and movement as a vehicle for engaged learning.  You won't believe what our students danced about!  See below then ask your student for more details ...

  • 1st grade:  Did you know that "Plants Can't Sit Still?"  It's true.  They are always in motion and your first grader can show you!
  • 2nd grade:  Different habitats each have their own unique features and animals.  We used different kinds of dance energies and styles to reflect the beauty of each habitat.
  • 3rd grade:  3rd grade broke a few rules and danced all kinds of prepositions with their chairs!  On, across, under, next to, away from, over, etc.!  Find a safe space and try it at home.
  • 4th and 5th grade learned about Personal Space and Shared Space and how it applies to the author's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person Points of View.
  • 6th grade played different dance games, practiced sequencing and had an organized "dance party" to get warmed up for a year of dance at Spanish Oaks.

It makes you wonder if perhaps the best learning takes place when students AREN'T sitting still!
