Road to Success Assembly

Today our Road to Success Assembly was a little out of the norm.  Our very own Aubrey Smith wanted to show students how cool it is to write your own stories and make them come to life.  She came up with a skit starring Snore-a the Explorer and Squeaky the Mouse.  Snore-a and Squeaky were on a quest to find the perfect playground.  On their way, they ran into a Troll, Captain Awesome, and even befriended Wanda the Witch. Snore-a learned that day that it was more important to make new friends than to find the perfect playground. Thank you Aubrey for sharing your writing talent and for teaching students that reading and writing are cool!

Students earn tickets for the minutes they read during the month.  The more minutes they read, the more tickets they earn.  Tickets are drawn and those students win books during our Road to Success Assemblies.  During our assembly today, students won books and in addition, two tickets were dawn for bike winners!  I have never seen two students more excited to win a bike before!  Their faces were priceless.

We had a school-wide goal of earning $5,000 during our Jog-a-Thon.  If the students were to reach that goal then Mrs. Brown would get slimed in front of the whole school.  We exceeded that goal with $5,071.90.  As promised, today Mrs. Brown got slimed during an assembly and it wasn't a disappointment!  Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQbXqIcqUIM to watch the video.

Veterans Day Assembly

Today we had our Veterans Day Assembly, which is one of our favorite assemblies of the year. It began with the school choir singing a few patriotic songs. Next, we watched a video about how our National Anthem came to be. Then, all the veterans attending the assembly came up on stage to introduce themselves and tell what part of the military they served in. Last, the 5th grade sang patriotic songs while we viewed a picture slideshow of veterans that are family members of students or teachers at our school. It was a heart-touching and emotional assembly. Thank you to all our veterans for being our heroes. #SpanishOaksExplorers #BeSomeonesHero

We have some great students at Spanish Oaks who always show exceptional behavior!  We chose five students who were nominated by a faculty member or peer for going the extra mile ... we would like to recognize them for having a positive impact on our school.  They are students that have made a special effort by performing the remarkable behavior(s) of:  Being Kind ...Showing Respect ... Working Hard.

Our faculty and student body cheered them on this morning as they "lapped" the school.  They also had a great time being treated like the Heroes they are at a special luncheon with Mrs. Brown.  Our Excellent Explorer Award winners are: Rigby Garner; "everyday that I have Rigby in library he shows exceptional character.  He is always doing what he should be doing.  He participates in lessons and helps other find books.  I am so impressed by the exceptional young man."  Lila Ewell; "Lila is a light in our classroom.  She is polite, happy, kind, positive and always willing to help others.  She always has a beautiful smile on her face, and she works hard and puts forth her best effort."  Daphne Clarke;  "Daphne is a superb student at school.  She is always cooperative and willing to participate during lessons.  She is a great example."  Jaycee Pack; "Jaycee is always so kind and helpful to all the other students.  She is so willing to help me whenever I need it.  She is an amazing student and friend."  Allena Good;  "On the fieldtrip she took off her jacket and let me use it because I was cold and she is a good friend.  She is always showing respect.  She is so kind to everyone around her and looks for opportunities to be kind."  Congratulations students!

Third Graders Enjoy Harry Potter Sorting

Mon, 10/30/2017 - 1:03pm

(more pictures available)

This year the third graders at Spanish Oaks are reading Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. In the book, the students participate in a sorting ceremony which is a ritual performed at the beginning of each school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its purpose is to assign students to one of the four school HousesGryffindorHufflepuffRavenclaw, or Slytherin. This gives them the opportunity to learn and work with their house team throughout the year to earn house points and rewards for their hard work in school. On October 27th the third-grade students were excited to participate in their very own sorting ceremony. It was a fun and exciting event! The gym was decorated in the colors of each house and we had many parents come out to support and cheer the students on. Each student tried on the sorting hat and the hat identified important characteristics that the student possesses. Then the students were sorted into one of the four school houses; Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. Our sixth grade also joined in on the fun by welcoming the newly sorted students into their houses.  After the sorting, the students were able to go back to class and learn about house points and how they will be working together as a team to earn rewards and participate in fun activities throughout the rest of the school year.
