Earthquake Drill

Sat, 04/21/2018 - 4:03pm

(more pictures available)

Yesterday we had a successful school earthquake drill.  Each teacher reviewed with their class what to do in case of a real earthquake and then got to practice what it should look like.

Classroom: get under a desk and make sure your whole body is covered as much as possible. Hold onto the desk or table if possible. DO NOT stand in doorways the doors can pinch your fingers or swing and hit you. Stand in a corner of two stable walls. Do not stand by filing cabinets or anything that is unstable and could fall on you.

School: Find a place where things will not fall on you (pictures, basketball hoops, tv, etc..) find a place that is safe between two walls if possible. Stay away from windows.

Outside: Stand in the field, not near power lines, basketball hoops, or on the play equipment.

Way to go Spanish Oaks for practicing school safety!

In April each year the State of Utah schedules a state wide earthquake drill.  The purpose for this event is to encourage schools to become better prepared for a major earthquake.  Nebo School District teaches the Drop, Cover and Hold-On (DCH) instruction recommenced by the USOE and state emergency managers.

Our Spanish Oaks Elementary drill was a huge success.  We did find that getting under cover was easy, it was getting back out that was tricky, especially for the adults :)

5th Grade Program

Wed, 04/18/2018 - 4:02pm

(more pictures available)

Today we had the opportunity to watch the 5th-grade program.  It was jam-packed with facts about U.S. History from songs, speaking parts, and quiz questions.  A 5th-grade student would ask a quiz question and the rest of the students in the school would use sign language to tell their teacher what letter option they thought was the correct answer.  The teacher would use letter cards to show the 5th grade what their class thought the answer was.  Then the 5th grade would sing a song about the answer to the quiz question. Thank you to Josie Chilton for being a wonderful pianist!  Great job 5th grade!

VOCAL DIMENSION “OPERAWORKS”  is a mixed quartet with piano accompanist that presented an entertaining introduction to the world of Opera.  Students learned about the history, the voice parts, and various elements of Opera.  They enjoyed the “light” side of Opera as they, themselves, became the makeup artist, prop director and sang in the Opera chorus of a delightful version of the “Three Pigs.” Energetic, and fast-paced, “Operaworks” proves that Opera really can be fun!!

Today Mr. Crockett's class received the supplies that were awarded from a Donors Choose Grant.  His class now has headphones to go along with their Chromebooks.  This allows the students to do even more with their Chromebooks.  As they are working on projects and need to add sound, or watch a video from a presentation; they can do so without interrupting their fellow students.  Students can now accomplish even more in class thanks to this generous donation from the Ripple Company and the donorchoose.org site that allows teachers to apply for grants and lets individuals help those teachers out.

Thanks to donorschoose.org and Ripple again for the wonderful gift for our class.

Classified Employee of the Year for Spanish Oaks

Angie Lindstrom is a great choice for our employee of the year!
She loves the outdoors and goes to Wyoming a couple times a year to camp with her parents. She adores her parents, and is a wonderful daughter, wife, mom, grandma and every other title she holds. She likes to sew and is very crafty! She has so many talents, but one I saw regularly was her ability to fix things. I mean she is the laminator whisperer! She is just the best person on the planet! She is kind, thoughtful and an amazing friend to all that know her. To know her is to love her. She exemplifies what We want Spanish Oaks to be.
