We love Friday mornings and afternoons with our kindergarten reading buddies!  Mrs. Rivera's class reads and/or helps with all the kindergarten classes every Friday.  It's a highlight of our week.  Not only do kindergarten students benefit from the one on one interaction with older students, the sixth graders have learned responsibility as well as improving their peer relationships.  We make our mark every Friday!

Principal Moment

Welcome back from Spring Break!  We are now officially in the season of Spring.   This also means we are in the season of field trips.  Over the years I have been on many – here are some universal field trip truths:

  1. When you send home permission slips, you will never get 100 percent of them back by the due date.
  2. When it is time to board the bus, one child will have to go to the bathroom.
  3. When you say, “I just asked everyone to go,” he will answer, “I didn’t have to go then.”
  4. As soon as he returns, five others will have to go, too.
  5. Immediately after the bus pulls away from the school, at least one child will say, “When will we get there?”
  6. Ten minutes after you arrive, one child will ask, “When’s lunch?”
  7. The teacher will spend the entire trip counting students’ heads to make sure everyone is there.  (This is like playing Duck, Duck, Goose. For six hours.)
  8. If there is a gift shop, they will ask if they can buy something.
  9. The farther you walk with your students in a line, the more spread out it will become.
  10. When it’s time to hop back onto the bus, several students will try to renegotiate the seating arrangement.
  11. Upon returning to the school, half the class will be asleep.

Kindergarten Registration - It’s Not Too Late

Kindergarten registration was held last week.  If you have forgotten, it’s not too late, your child can still come to school next year!! To register your child please go to http://riverview.nebo.edu/registration#kpre.  We will need a copy of birth certificate, immunizations, and proof of residency.

Year End Testing

End of year testing is upon us. I recently read the following in Business Insider, written by a principal in Singapore: "I know you are all really anxious for your child to do well. But, please do remember, amongst the students who will be sitting for the exams there is an artist, who doesn't need to understand Math… There is an entrepreneur, who doesn't care about History or English literature…There is a musician, whose Chemistry marks won't matter…There's an athlete…whose physical fitness is more important than Physics… If your child does get top marks, that's great! But if he or she doesn't…please don't take away their self-confidence and dignity from them. Tell them it's OK, it’s just an exam! They are cut out for much bigger things in life. Tell them, no matter what they score…you love them and will not judge them. Please do this, and when you do… watch your children conquer the world. One exam or low mark won't take away…their dreams and talent. And please, do not think that doctors and engineers…are the only happy people in the world."

Mrs. Ferrin's class used technology to learn about the different ecosystems of the world. The students each mastered their given ecosystem and then taught each other about them. They loved using the chrome books to watch videos, look at pictures, and read about the ecosystems. They also loved sharing what they learned with their peers!

The 10 happiest jobs in America.  This is the name of an article which appeared in USA Today on March 8, 2015.  Based on findings from CareerBliss, the number one happiest job in America is School principal.  Pssh, they didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know!?!

I love being a principal!  I credit that to the Riverview community.  We make a great team-you, your children, and the faculty/staff here at Riverview!  It is great to be in a community that values education and that certainly makes it rewarding!

The best part of the job?  The students!  It is really neat for us to see the students’ progress through the day, week, term, and year.

It is also wonderful to help create a safe school environment where every child who walks through our doors feels really good about being here.

I don’t love every aspect but any challenge is worth the reward when we get to change students’ lives.

The secret to a happy job…spend the day with kids!

Family in Need

We have a Riverview family who lost their home to a fire on Saturday.  They were at a piano recital on Saturday morning when they think an RC car battery got overheated and started a fire in their basement.  The basement is a complete loss as the fire was going for awhile before it was discovered.  The house will most likely need to be rebuilt and the smoke and water damage has ruined everything else.

This family has three children who attend Riverview... twin boys in 4th grade and a 1st grade girl.  They also have a 3 yr old girl at home.   They are in a hotel for the week and have a rental lined up to live in until their home is rebuilt.

They basically have nothing but the clothes on their back.  We are hoping to assist this Riverview family by having a Penny War after Spring Break for 2 weeks; April 9th – 20th.  All of the money raised will go to the Bluth Family.

Principal Moment

So much has changed since I was a kid.  When I was the students’ age, we turned the dial on phones, found books in the card catalog, waited a whole year to see The Sound of Music on TV, unfolded car maps to find directions, and painted typing mistakes with Liquid Paper.

We dropped the needle on the spinning record and hoped we’d hit the beginning of the song on the very first try, waited for the cassette to beep before turning the knob on the filmstrip projector, and changed the due date in the librarian’s stamp when she wasn’t looking.

Of course nothing has changed like technology.  Kids DVR their favorite television shows, text on smart phones, shuffle tunes on Pandora, ride in cars with GPS, Skype their grandparents, go LIVE on Facebook and post digital photos on Instagram and Snapchat.

As one who grew up with scratchy records and watching television in black and white, I sometimes feel lost.  It’s not my fault really.  When I was in teacher school, my technology class consisted of changing the bulb in the overhead, making sure the slides in the carousel weren’t upside down, and feeding film into the movie projector so it didn’t spill out all over the floor.

A “bug” was something you brought in from recess to show your teacher.  A “desktop” was something you scraped dried Elmer’s glue off of with your scissors.  “Viruses” kept you home from school.  “Monitors” cleared the boys out of the bathrooms on rainy-day recess.  The “mouse” was something you forgot to feed.  “Windows” were what you opened.  And “cursors” were sent to the principal’s office.

Do I worry that I’m becoming a relic?  Am I concerned about becoming outdated?  Not in the least.  It’s the gadgets that have changed, not the children. When throwing something away, they will always shoot a basket.  When playing kickball, they will climb on the backstop while they’re waiting for their turn.  Someone’s shoe will go flying when he kicks the ball.  If you excuse them for lunch one second late, they will let you know.  When they deliver something to the office, they will return to the classroom panting because they ran through the halls the whole way.  Just before you pass around photos, they will promise to touch only the edges, when you get the photos back, they will be covered with fingerprints. They will make gagging noises if you mention the words kiss, hug, embrace, or smooch.   These things will never change.  Good things usually don’t.

THANKS PTA

On behalf of all Riverview teachers, I would like to thank the PTA for providing a wonderful SEP dinner!  Dinner was catered by Pepe’s Grill with a delicious fried ice cream dessert!  We felt very loved!

These pictures show one of my favorite things to do with the students. They each have a chance to read some of their writing in front of the class if they choose to do so. They are able to choose a free write, quick write, or other writing assignment they have worked on! They love to share with their peers and it is a good way to see where they are at in their writing without having to read every single paper! :)

Principal Moment

There are certain things that a teacher must never do:  Never pour Plaster of Paris down the sink.  Never stand on a bathroom scale when teaching your students about pounds and ounces.  Never throw a wilted flower away in front of the child who gave it to you no matter how droopy it is.  And never forget to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day.

On St. Patrick’s Day, children fall into one of four categories- those who cover themselves from head to toe in green, those who wear one or two articles of green clothing, those who forgot and wear no green at all, and the tricksters.  These are the kids who appear to not be wearing any green.  But as soon as you point this out to them they shout, “Yes, I am!” then bend over and reveal the two-millimeter stitch of green thread on the back of their shoe.

Every year some children will argue.  “Mrs. Killian, so and so pinched me and I have green on!” The child will lift up his/her pant leg or shirt or sleeve to reveal a green sticker.  Then I hear something like: “Nuh-huh…did not” “Yes, you did!”  “NO!  I fake-pinched you.”   Four years of college and a master’s cannot prepare you for this stuff!  Thank goodness St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday this year.

SEP Conferences

Riverview SEP Conferences will be held Wednesday, March 14th and Thursday, March 15th.  SEP Conferences will be held Wednesday from 3:20 – 5:00 PM and Thursday from 3:20-8:00 PM.  You will be getting an email from SignUpGenius.  This email will allow you to visit the website, find your child’s teacher (s), and sign-up for the time that is most convenient to your individual schedule.  Parents, if you find a need to change your appointment the day of conferences, please contact the teacher so he/she is aware of the change.  Thank you.

Kindergarten Pre-Registration

Kindergarten pre-registration is approaching.  This process will be different from past years.  Online pre-registration will open March 12th – March 23rd.  On Wednesday, March 21st, parents may come to the school.  The computer lab will be open to assist parents in the online pre-registration.   Please bring, on Wednesday, March 21st, a copy of proof of residency, a birth certificate and up-to-date vaccinations.  The following vaccines are required for students entering Kindergarten:

  • 5 DTP/DTaP/DT - 4 doses if 4th dose was given on/after the 4th birthday
  • 4 Polio - 3 doses if 3rd dose was given on/after the 4th birthday
  • 2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
  • 3 Hepatitis B
  • 2 Hepatitis A
  • 2 Varicella (Chickenpox) - history of disease is acceptable, parent must sign verification statement on school immunization recor

The roles identified below need to be filled ASAP (fortunately much of the leg work has been completed already) – please respond by Friday, March 9th:

1.  Activities Committee Chair (committee members will be needed too, but the Chair is crucial) This committee will take the lead of the activities component of the Carnival. We have potential vendors identified already. We need your help making the carnival FUN.

2.  Food Committee Chair (committee members will be needed too, but the Chair is crucial)  This committee will oversee the food component of the Carnival by determining what will be served, as well as overseeing the preparation and distribution of food items.

3.  Marketing Committee Chair (a committee member has volunteered, but the Chair is crucial) This committee will assist in providing already created materials to teachers and parents through print media and social media.

4.  Ticket Committee Chair (committee members have already volunteered) This committee will oversee the presale of tickets, distribution of tickets, and ticketing at the event.

5.  Donations Committee Members (a volunteer is already chairing this committee) This committee will assist in contacting businesses to seek donations for silent auction baskets, prizes and food. Materials are already created to assist with asking for donations.

If you know individuals who manage or own local businesses and would be willing to ask them for a donation to the school, please let us know immediately! We will provide tax receipts to businesses.

CARNIVAL VOLUNTEERS:

I am excited for the opportunity to continue to help our school develop and provide outstanding opportunities to our children. Your consideration and support of the Carnival by volunteering, donating to, and attending, is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or would like to assist in any of the ways described above, please contact me.
