In 5th grade social studies we've been learning about the Revolutionary War. Yesterday we were learning about the Boston Massacre where groups of colonists threw snowballs and rocks at British soldiers. We did a snowball activity where the students answered questions like "what do you do when you're upset" "How do you manage being upset" and "how did people during the revolutionary war manage being upset" and then got to throw their crumpled up paper across the room. We had a good discussion on how they managed their anger and how it affected the Revolutionary War.

Our student council members attended a leadership conference at BYU on Monday! They listened to some inspiring speakers and learned leadership skills to bring back to Brookside this year. Some of these students’ favorite take-aways were: lead others with your heart and your brain, have a positive attitude, be inclusive, be kind, be more accepting, and have grit!

Unfair Taxes

Brookside Elementary News - Mon, 10/15/2018 - 1:49pm

In fifth grade, we have been learning about the causes of the American Revolution.  In Miss Bird’s class, we have had an economy from the beginning of school where the kids have been earning tigers for their weekly pay and doing good work.  The past couple of weeks, we have started having taxes and the students are beginning to hate this time. The taxes increase in frequency until they finally just get angry and “rebel” like the colonist did.  These taxes are unfair like wearing jeans, blonde hair, having a sister. We also had some fees like a chair fee. This is a great visual for the kids to see how the colonist felt when the British were imposing all of the unfair taxes.

The Big Bad Wolf Strikes Again!

What a fun day in first grade! We participated in a STEM project where we had to build houses for the 3 little pigs. All we could use were dots and toothpicks to make our houses. Once our houses were built the Big Bad Wolf tried to blow them down! Some of our houses fell down the first time, but after we improved them they all stayed up! We had so much fun planning, building, experimenting, improving, and presenting our plans. The pigs are safe from the Big Bad Wolf now!

Our fifth grade classes headed down to the Kindergarten hall with teaching in mind. Each fifth grader assisted one Kindergarten student in learning and practicing the Art of tying shoes. The Kindergarten students had a splendid time learning from their older peers and were eager to show them they were up to the task. The fifth grade students jumped in with both feet and began the tying show down. What a wonderful way to learn and grow together.
