Miss Johnson's class was honored to have Kristen Betts (Nebo Board of Education President) come in and read a Christmas story. She read the story Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree and talked about the nice message it gives. She also gave us treats shaped like Christmas Trees so we could remember the message. Miss Johnson’s class is so glad that she came to spread some Christmas Cheer. Thanks also to Jasie Hawkes for talking Mrs. Betts into coming.

The Mustang Charitable Fundraiser recently finished up by raising $3479.20 that will now go toward three different causes. First, it was used last week to fund our Sub for Santa project - Student government students went shopping and bought gifts for local kids so they can have a christmas that they might not have had. Second, we will be buying fleece and tying the ends to make blankets for Utah Valley Hospital Primary Children's Network in Provo. Lastly, with the remaining money we will be donating supplies to a women and children shelter that helps local women and children going through a crisis. Thank you for your amazing support of this holiday tradition!

Spirit of the Mustang Recipient - Benjamin Frame

Mapleton Junior High School News - Thu, 12/14/2017 - 4:43pm
Attributions: Mailani Ovard

The faculty and staff at Mapleton Junior High are amazing.  The choice was very difficult because every teacher here at Mapleton makes a difference in the lives of the students we teach.  I have been told that the person I am nominating has never received the Spirit of the Mustang, even with all his years here at Mapleton Junior High.  He quietly goes about doing his work and changing the lives of the students.

The Spirit of the Mustang this month goes to Benjy Frame. Benjy is a genuine person and the students can feel that he cares.  Benjy has worked with students as a coach and has guided them to achieve their potential in their sporting events.  More than that though, is how he is always looking for ways the make learning meaningful and yet not overwhelming to students who struggle.  Benjy uses memorization techniques for the capitals of the world.  He also uses  computer programs that look like a games, but actually help with memorization of countries and capitals. He has visual aides to help students study for tests.  He lets the students have choices when doing their country reports, but is organized enough to have specific questions that can be applied to each country helping the students with their research.  He has a graphic organizer letting the students know what information needs to be in each paragraph of the essay they write about the country.  He has alternate ways that students can retake tests. It seems like a small thing, but for any student and especially the student who struggles it makes a difference. He is willing to look at a student and say this is what this student needs. He creates a way for them to learn and not get frustrated.

Benjy is always willing to work with teachers who help students in his class.  He makes it easy to work with him and does it with a positive attitude. He goes about his job without looking for recognition because it is not about him. It is about the students. Benjy you are wonderful to work with and a great teacher.  Go Benjy! Go Mustangs!

5th Grade Reaction Time by Isaac Marshall

A couple days ago a scientist came in for a assembly to told about different types of matter and do some experiments.

One of my favorite experiments he did was when he mixed a lot of things in a huge glass container. After he put in the last ingredient, it foamed up and then overflowed and got all over. Another one that I liked was when he put different powders on three small glass plates with a tiny bit of alcohol he lit it on fire. The different fires were red, green, and amber. My favorite experiment that he did was he put two liquids in a bottle and it grew huge and created a solid. It was so cool!

After the assembly the classes took turns going into a classroom and doing experiments ourselves. When we came in we got split into several groups.  Each group had goggles for everybody  and six testing tubes and chemicals. We took turns mixing different chemicals and writing it down. I thought this was really fun because we got to participate and actually use chemicals and have fun mixing them together. When everybody was done, we mixed all five chemicals.  The result was that it exploded.  It was awesome!
