Salem Jr High Earns ENERGY STAR Award

Salem Junior High School News - Mon, 03/26/2018 - 10:08am

Image result for energy star graphicSalem Jr High was recently awarded the ENERGY STAR award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This is an amazing feat because in order to qualify, a building must score in the top 75 percentile compared against other schools in the nation. Our district average score was 99.

The certification process for Energy Star is not an easy one. Air quality, lighting quality, and the overall Energy Use Index readings and calculations are taken into account. This data, along with many other data points, are used to compare our facility to other facilities throughout the country.

This is a great win for Salem Jr High and Nebo School District. Our district has the most certified facilities out of any organization in the state of Utah, at 44. This makes us an Energy Star leader in the state!

Lexy Webster places 3rd in state spelling bee championship

Salem Junior High School News - Thu, 03/15/2018 - 9:36am

Lexy Webster took 3rd place in the state spelling bee championship on Saturday, March 10. She said it was a great experience and she had a lot of fun. She received a brand new laptop and bragging rights for doing so well (although Lexy definitely isn't the type to brag about herself). Lexy has been taking part in spelling bees since 4th grade and has always done really well. This is the last year that Lexy is eligible to participate in the bee, so it was an excellent way to finish her run.

This is not a small feat. The state-wide spelling bee is very competitive and has students from schools all over Utah. Before the traditional rounds of elimination that most of us have seen in movies, students take a written test. This is where most students are eliminated. Even making it past that point is great. The fact that she took 3rd out of all those kids is pretty awesome. Make sure to congratulate Lexy if you see her.

Fifth-graders at Salem Elementary recently participated in the Fifth Grade Science Fair.  Science fairs are a great way for students to take an active role in science. Fifth-graders used the Scientific Method to help them in understanding and expanding their knowledge of a specific science topic of their choice.  Many hours were spent researching and developing their presentations.  Students were able to present their scientific findings to students at the school during the day, and then to their parents later that evening.  Each and every student who participated had some very interesting ideas and scientific discoveries to share with us.  Great job to all students for there efforts!
