MNJHS winter sports captains recently had the opportunity to attend the Nebo School District Captains Academy.  This event focuses on the principals of good sportsmanship and team leadership skills.

Students participating from MNJHS were:

Mo Draper - Basketball

Enoch Vance - Wrestling

Brett Renzello - Basketball

Skylee Draper - Basketball

Zayden Godfrey - Basketball

'Chris Loveless, Assistant Principal at Payson High School and former coach, presented to the students on sportsmanship. He said this event has a tremendous impact on the students who participate.

“I think this is a great opportunity for students,” Loveless said. “They are able to learn some very important skills, interact with other students, and then they can return to their schools and influence their other teammates based on what they learn here.”

Dustin Smith, founder and president of the organization “Especially for Athletes” spoke to the students about leadership. He emphasized that leadership is thinking outward and being humble.

“It’s important to not get caught up in the ‘disease of me,’” Smith said. “Just because you’re a leader, it doesn’t meant that you deserve more recognition or praise or that you should be appreciated more than your counterparts. True leadership respects others.”

Troy Bohling, Coordinator of School Services, said that this event promotes camaraderie and good sportsmanship between the schools.

“What I love the most is to see the interaction between the tables,” Bohling said. “These students compete against each other all the time, but they like each other and it’s really fun to see them work together.”'- Nebo School District

Barnett Bulldogs honored local Veterans in their Veterans Day Assembly on November 10. The Barnett Choir sang a series of songs that honored the Veterans. The whole school joined in on a song for the grand finale. After the assembly, Veterans went to classrooms as part of "Take a Veteran to School". They told stories, showed artifacts from their time in the service, and answered questions from the students. This is one of the most special days of the whole school year where we were able to meet fathers and mother, grandparents, uncles and aunts who serve and served our country.  Thank you to the men and women in the military for everything you do. We love you.

Claire Rowley, Gavin Scholl, and Madison Houston were chosen for the Academic All-State this year at Payson High.  The Academic All-State is organized by the UHSAA, Utah High School Academic Association, the students are chosen by the state. In order to receive this award students must maintain a exemplementry GPA, and a high ACT score. Sports is a big commitment and Academic All-State is here to recognize the students who kept their grades up. Utah wants to recognize the athletes who do well on the field, the court, and the classroom.

Students must have at least a 3.75 GPA . This year a lot of Students qualified, so students with a 4.0 have a better chance to make it. The school had 3 amazing students who qualified: Claire Rowley for soccer, Gavin Scholl for football, and Madison Houston for Volleyball.  Mr. Archer said, “It’s a great challenge, these kids should be here at school, for school not for sports.” The students are recognized during the last game of the year and are given a plaque. Claire Rowley’s advice for the juniors is, “Don’t give up on your grades, even if it seems hard.”

When asked, Krislynn’s teacher said, “Krislynne does a good job in class. She stays on task and does what she is supposed to do. She is taking a clothing class, U.S. Government, art, drama, and seminary, so she is out in the general education environment quite a bit. She also loves cats.”
