We are working on How-To writing in class. We discussed how-to-make a snowman. The students and I talked about what we needed to do first, next, then, and last. I had a model that  we wrote together and the students could change theirs to how they wanted. Then we we made a snow globe out of paper and built our snowmen inside.

Lady Lobos Dominate Lady Diamondbacks with Strong Second Half

Spanish Fork Junior High School News - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 2:33pm
Attributions: By Shea Harmer with Rillene Nielsen

The SFJHS Girls Basketball team took on rival Diamond Fork Jr. last week in a heated competition.

The game started slowly with the Lady Lobos scoring in the single digits during the first quarter.  Diamond Fork was a persistent competitor, shadowing the Lobos point for point, never far behind.

However, after halftime, the Ladies came out with a vengeance, ready to play.  They were easily able to defeat Diamond Fork’s press getting easy breakaway baskets and multiple second shot points.  They were not about to let the Diamond Backs win on their home court.

According to Coach Shea Harmer, “Spanish Fork finally put the things they had been working on in practice, into place and almost like magic; they were able to get a large lead on DFJHS.”

In the end, our Lady Lobos won by close to 20 points.  Macie Clark was our leading scorer.

Come support your Lady Lobos as they finish out the second half of their season.

Book Buddies!

Mrs. Thacker’s FACS Exploration A classes were busy making Book Buddies this week.  Every Book Buddy is unique because each student creates their own pattern and design concept. It’s fun to see just how much personality can be created by fabric scraps, a few buttons, and some thread.  A Book Buddy is a small stuffed toy that is made for first graders.  It's designed to be small enough to easily fit in the first graders’ desks.  First graders can read out loud to their Book Buddies to improve their reading fluency.  Book buddies are a collaborative effort.  Now that the students in FACS Exploration A are done creating the Book Buddies, the National Jr. Honor's Society will name them and create a small story about them.  While National Jr. Honor Society is busy writing stories, second-semester FACS Exploration A and Apparel Design and Production 1 classes will start working on creating more Book Buddies.   All of the Book Buddies that are created this year will be delivered to area first graders next year. If you want to make a Book Buddy, make sure to sign up for FACS Exploration A (7th or 8th grade) or Apparel Design and Production 1 (9th grade).

Mrs. Anderson's Classes Loves to Write

Diamond Fork Junior High School News - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 10:32am
(more pictures available)

During the month of December, students in Mrs. Anderson's English and Creative Writing classes took on the Writer's Workout Challenge. To be a better writer, one must write. And write. And consistently write. To encourage the students to write, they were challenged to write for 20 minutes for 20 nights over a four week period. The appeal was that they could choose ANY topic to write on. All writing was above and beyond school work and none of their entries were required. Some wrote poems, song lyrics, narratives, and chapters to books they are in the process of writing! They were rewarded with a little extra credit and daily drawings.  Over 100 students participated throughout the 4 weeks, and 28 students completed the full 20 day challenge. These 28 students' names were entered into a drawing for bigger prizes like gift cards, journals, sketch books, paintings, and, of course, candy! Mostly, they were rewarded with a greater appreciation for prized, quiet, writing time and greater skill. One of the most beautiful things an English teacher can hear is: "You're right! I really can write. And I like it!"
