Ryan Flake, an eighth-grade student at Spanish Fork Jr. High, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on December 15, 2017, and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship.  The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 30th annual National Geographic Bee.  In order to participate in the Bee, eighth graders had to pass a written test with a high qualifying score.  There were only 30 seats available for the entire eighth grade so being able to participate is an accomplishment in and of itself.  The following students qualified and participated in the school competition:

Connor Gates, Laycee Bills, Carter Cook, Emmie Olson, McKay Shaffer, Gwen Beagley, Sydney Chipman, Jones Lewis, Questin Francis, Brian Gunyan, Wyatt Hughes-Millman, Brenner Shepherd, Natalie Olsen, Zac Dart, Samuel Clements, Ellie Maughan, Trevor Stephens, Kate Jones, Xander Lacefield, Kelsey Mansfield, Cole Gwilliam, Andrew Porter, Ryan Flake, Ashton Szalkowski, and Kade Baum

Ryan Flake finished the competition in First Place with Wyatt Hughes-Millman finishing in Second Place and Sydney Chipman finishing in Third Place.  Congratulations to our school finalists!

School winners around the country, including Ryan, will now take a written test to be eligible to compete in the state Geographic Bee on April 6, 2018.  State winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to participate in the National Geographic Bee and a chance for a $50,000 scholarship.

January Mayor Award

Payson Junior High School News - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 3:31pm

(more pictures available)

The recipient of the Mayor Award for January is PJHS student Viviana Lopez. Viviana was selected for this award because of her hard work in school, her willingness to participate and help others, and her positive attitude. Here are what some of Viviana's teachers have to say:

Viviana Lopez was elected LIA president by her peers. She's an excellent leader and always does her best efforts  to have a friendly environment to make everybody feel that anything is possible. Viviana is organized, a hard worker, and an achieved student. I have no doubt that Viviana will accomplish whatever she chooses to do in life. I see daily how her peers seek her out everyday, that is the highest praise anyone can give. - Mrs. Padlock

Viviana is great at participating in class and helping those around her. She is always trying to solve problems on her own, but is not shy about asking for help when she needs to. She is a hard worker and a great student to be the recipient of the Mayor's Award! - Ms. Failes

She is so helpful in ESL. She always tries to answer the questions in group discussions - and most of the time is spot on!  She is a kind student - looking out for people who need extra help. - Ms. Clayton

Vivi is a fun and vivacious personality who is a hard worker and a good example to others in the school. - Mr. Davis

I had Viviana last year, but she was always a good student. She also was willing to help those around her in class when they didn't understand. I also know that she is very involved in LIA and does that. What a rockstar! - Ms. LeBaron

Viviana is a student who doesn't go unnoticed. She quietly comes in each day ready to work and do her best. Viviana is diligent about coming prepared daily and putting in her best effort. I love her happy disposition and her willingness to participate--she is a model student and a fine example to her peers. Congrats! - Mrs. Gillie

Great work, Viviana! Thank you for being a Grizzly Hero!
