On Monday, August 21, SFJHS students enjoyed watching the solar eclipse outside on the south lawn. The science teachers had created viewing projectors and viewing boxes, so even those who did not have solar eclipse rated glasses, could still see the moon eclipse the sun.

7th Grade English students have an opportunity this week to read their first article of the month titled “What is an Eclipse?” This will be the first of many cross-curricular connections for SFJHS students this year.

Several students had the opportunity to travel out of state to witness the total eclipse. Andrew Heap said, “It was indescribable. You were even able to see stars and planets, including Mercury, which not very many people see because it is so close to the sun. I would travel long distances to see that again.” Trenton Spencer said, “Thirty minutes before the eclipse, it started to get really cold and dark. Then when it was total, the sun was totally blocked and the sun's atmosphere was white. Right before it ended, there was a bright white light and it warmed up very quickly.” Adam Blake said, “It was the best experience of my whole summer. Can’t wait 'til 2045!!!!!!!”

SFJHS now offers AP Human Geography, a class for 9th grade students who will prepare to take the AP Human Geography test at the end of the year. This college-level course is highly rigorous. In this course, students study systematic patterns and processes that shape human understanding.

Tracee Jones says, “I took AP because I want to learn more about the people all over the world and why they act or say or do what they do.” Alissa Simmons says, “I want to push myself. I have to admit, it has been challenging.” McCade Davis says, “It’s going to be a challenge, especially with other activities going on in my life, but I think I’m up for the challenge.”

This class is taught by Ms. Terry. It’s an exciting opportunity for our students here at SFJHS. Good luck to our first ever class of AP Human Geography!

Pack Time Begins Tomorrow

Spanish Fork Junior High School News - Tue, 08/29/2017 - 6:34pm

Spanish Fork Junior’s Pack Time is designed to motivate and give help to students who may need extra support or are struggling academically. Its purpose is also to reward students who consistently do well in all of their classes at school.

Each day (except for Mondays) students will have the opportunity to attend either an intervention or an enrichment experience.

• All Students receive a mini-report card during 2nd period that shows their current grade in all classes.

• Students who are passing all of their classes with at least a C will have the opportunity to participate in an enrichment activity of their choice. The activities may include athletics, clubs, games, movies, computers, arts, crafts, public speaking, poetry slam, writing for publishing, and socializing.

• Students who are deficient in a class are required to attend an intervention in order to receive additional instruction or to make up work. They must attend the class in which they are deficient; in the case of multiple deficiencies they should attend the priority class for that day.

• If students have a passing grade but need to make up or re-do work for a class, with teacher approval, they may choose to attend an intervention in place of enrichment.

• If a teacher needs a student to make up or re-do work they may request that the student attend their intervention time in place of enrichment, regardless of the student’s graDE.

TO VIEW THE PACK TIME SCHEDULE, go to Parent and Student Information in the menu to the left and click on Pack Time Schedule.

New schedule aims for increased students success

Landmark High School News - Tue, 08/29/2017 - 8:44am

Landmark's teachers and staff have been looking forward to this school year since before last year's graduation! They spent a good portion of last year researching and laying the groundwork for the implementation of a new schedule for the 17-18 school year.

Each traditional term of 10 class courses will now be split into two mini-terms consisting of 5 courses each. The new 'Mini-term' schedule encourages teacher-student relationships, reduces student course load, offer more fresh starts, and promotes student accountability, while retaining the credit load of the old schedule.

Who can solve the first Math Muncher for August

Salem Junior High School News - Tue, 08/29/2017 - 7:48am
Attributions:

School has begun and so the math department has issued its first challenge to our students. The first three Math Muncher problems have been posted. For those who are new to our school, every month the math department posts three math problems on their bulletin board. Each problem is worth tickets to enter a drawing to win a gift card courtesy the math department.

Students who answer these problems correctly can pass them off with their math teacher and recieve tickets. They will then write their name on the ticket and take it to Mrs. Johnson's class to enter the drawing. They always pick a winner from each grade level. The first question is worth one ticket, the second is worth two, and the third, of course, is worth three tickets. If students answer all three correctly they can get six tickets entered into the drawing.

Here is the first math muncher. Can you solve it?

Lobo Update 8/28/17

Spanish Fork Junior High School News - Mon, 08/28/2017 - 6:36pm

Parents, Students and Friends –

SFJHS has a belief that all students, faculty and staff belong to a community. In our community we practice the Lobo Way. That is, we strengthen the pack, learn to learn, forgive and accept, and find our voice. Throughout the school year and in all that we do we will learn about and practice each of these beliefs. The first belief is we will strengthen the pack. This means we will positively contribute to our classes, our school, and our community. We will see the good in others and build confidence, and we will respect and encourage individual strengths.

This afternoon I watched a group of friends at lunch out on the lawn. A girl came out of our building with a bit of anxiety about some boys who were squeaking their shoes in the hall during lunch. The noise hurt her sensitive ears and she was angry that the boys would be so loud. She had a hard time expressing her feelings about it, but the group listened to her as they were genuinely interested in helping. They could have ignored this girl, but they didn’t…they listened until an adult came by to help their new friend. This group of friends positively contributed to their school by just listening. The girl was able to regain her composure and left to her classroom happy. Our motto, by Rudyard Kipling, says. “For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.” There was a great deal of strength in the small act of listening today.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL NOMINATIONS
Every public school has a school community council consisting of the principal, elected school employees and parents. Parent input is important in the decisions made by our council. School Community Council (SCC) needs THREE PARENT NOMINATIONS to be on the council this school year. If you are interested in serving on the SJHS SCC, email Mr. Blake Mortensen at blake.mortensen@nebo.edu.

Come learn how your running shoes can transform any bad day into a good one, frustration into speed, self-doubt into confidence, and chocolate cake into muscle!
